I have a copy of Gears of War for XBox 360 to sell/give (for shipping cost plus extra). I guess I could bring it back to places like EB Games, but I dread their aftermarket stuff, they give you nothing for it and charge ripoff prices to customer to buy the game. I'd charge shipping cost from Montreal, Canada plus a little extra, I guess. The story behind the fact that I have the game can be resumed to the fact that I bought a 360 for a single night. Brought it back when I actually heard the machine work. It was louder than any of my current PCs and no way in hell I'd watch a movie or play a game with such noise around. The game was opened and played for less than an hour.

That could be true when you play boom boom games or movies. But if you're playing a puzzle game or something that doesn't have an infernal sound, then the vaccum drowns everything down. I mean, my Wii is whisper quiet, heck, all my PCs are quieter than this infernal box. The only thing that generates more noise than the Xbox 360 is my 1U Dell rackmountable server. That thing is made to go in server room where the decibel level is already at 60-65db

I don't notice the noise anymore, but it did concern me when I got one. The great games for the 360 helped me forget about it ;D

Honda Civic (Wii) vs. a 69 Camero with a 454 (360) vs. John Force Funny car (Dell server). They all do the job of getting you from point A to B but some are faster and louder. I'd take the 69 Camero any day over the Civic even though it gets better gas mileage and is cheaper. The funny car is situational. Some of the reviews I have been reading about the quad core overclocked processor boxes from a couple of the major manufacturers are labeling the boxes as louder than what you might want to hear when not playing games. Until they can come up with a better solution for cooling that doesn't cost an arm and a leg it may be something we have to live with.

Sound level is a deal breaker for me. And the only time I want to hear a vacuum is when I vacuum the house. You shouldn't get used to it. And if I had a 360, I'd try to use it as a dvd player and replace my dvd player with it and free the component inputs of my tv for the console, but watching movies with that box is impossible, unless you're always watching action movies.

Maybe my box is just quieter, cause I wouldn't even compare it to a vacuum. It makes noise, but nothing that I notice even when playing Hexic or Poker. I actually am amazed at how quiet it is overall and that it hasn't broken since I got it at launch. /em knocks on wood.

Well, it's no surprise, considering the vast amount of love I have toward Microsoft. The problem Ab is when playing games that use the DVD drive. When you're on Xbox Live or Live Arcade, the DVD isn't spinning and the sound is much more managable, but when you pop in a game and listen to the thing, you'll understand. It's a major problem. The Playstation 3 is much quieter (a friend of mine has one) and the Wii isn't making any noise at all.

I have watched a ton of movies onthe 360, both in the regular unit and the HD-DVD drive, all types, and haven't noticed any noise. I have a PS3, and yes it is quieter, until you put in a Bluray movie, then it gets up a bit and can get pretty hot, hotter than my 360 gets while watching a HD-DVD. I only notice that or the 360 when I am right up to it though.

Here's the pictures of the DVD trays: pictures.xbox-scene.com/xbox360/dvd/allthreedvdsxs.jpgThe BenQ is the first on the left. The BenQ is the silent one. And if that's the one you got, you might never understand the noise the Hitachi or the Toshiba made

I thought you meant the noise the fan makes when it gets warmer. My DVD drive isn't that loud. When it first spins the disc up it sounds like the DVD drive in my PC but, when using it for games or watching movies it is pretty much normal. Maybe you just got a loud drive in the one you had. Edit - Hehe, posted this before I saw your above post.
