I'm working up a system build - (timing might have something to do with recent events) - and I'm fishing for opinions/comments on it. system configWon't be migrating anything but files and monitor from my old system - so if something is missing.... Seems something ate the list - re entered....

Looks solid.
For $60 more you can get a 8800GT and its going to be a huge improvement. Or for $30 more you could get either the ATI HD3850 or the 9600GSO. At the very least you should get the 8600GTS instead of the GT. I saw one for $89 on newegg.. so thats $0 more for a small improvement.
I just ordered my system from newegg today. ;D I got the same exact memory!

Why 64bit Vista? Do many things utilize it now or are you future proofing?
How much is a blue-ray drive? It could be worth considering.

Check your Memory and Main Board - looks like you've got 4 sets of Memory on your Wish list for a board that had 4 total slots, except the memory kit as I read it is a 2 gig kit consisting of 2 seperate 1 Gig DIMMS. Ordering as written will get you 4 more sticks of memory than you can put in the board.

Winin: Main interest is to take advantage of more memory. Kaarenyth: Many thanks - no one else noted my slip up there... could have been a little awkward.

Can't 32-bit Vista handle 4 GB? I think that's what I have. I got a pre-fab from Dell.
I lost my leet rig-building skills when I left grad school.

No. Of those 4GB, you're most likely only seeing from 3GB to 3.5GB (depending on the amount of RAM you have on your graphics board). I know that Vista SP1 might cheat now and still show you 4GB even tho you won't be able to use all that memory for your applications. That limits comes from the fact that the OS is 32bit and 32bit is 2^32, which is 4294967296 bytes, or 4GB, the maximum amount of addressing space. There's tricks to get above 4GB of RAM on 32-bit OS, PAE is one of them, but it comes with a hit to the CPU and Microsoft doesn't enable PAE on consumer desktop OSes. Only on Windows Server.

I threw mine together yesterday.
The red G.Skill memory looks awesome!.. better than the pics. I didn't realize how big the new video cards are nowadays.. i though my 9800pro was big, but holy crap! the 8800GT is like a second motherboard!
I love it when everything goes together, boots up, and runs without any troubles.. for now at least. ;D

As big as that case is - just not enough room... but it's done.
Vista system rating 5.5...
Submitted new dxdiag just in case.
...lets roll

Two thoughts: - the freezer 7 has thermal paste (better safe than sorry) - case may come with fans? (my antec came with two full sets, checked the mfg site?)
Looks like a hot build - though a dual core (E for extreme)?
Planned OS?

Yea, the fans are actually for some extra slots on the case I ordered and an old case that I'm converting into a secondary computer. The paste...obviously I didn't read enough to know that the fan came with paste but I'm sure I'll find a use for it. OS: Vista 64 Ultimate I went back and forth on the CPU - I know most games won't make use of the quad core for a bit and, if I decided to buy one, I'd be taking a hit on performance for those games unless I shelled out a ton of cash for a faster processor and/or OC'd. I decided to go with the duo core because this is, really, a gamer rig and I see the quad more for a developer platform. Even though I code/work on this machine, I don't really do any video editing or use applications that will really make use of 4 cores. Yes, games may make use of 4 cores in the future...but the MoBo will take a quad core and I can always upgrade at that point OR move the guts of this build onto my wife and buy a new rig for me in 6 months. She's happy with her machine now and we plan to upgrade later for her so I'm sure she won't mind. heh Anyway...that is, probably, the one piece of hardware that I am least confident on (the CPU) although it wasn't enough to make me not go through with the purchase. Let me have it!
