That should be a decent rig, Wrasse. Nothing wrong with going duo for now.
I'm not crazy about that case though, and feel its WAY overpriced.

It is an expensive case...that's for sure. I really like the cooler master cases and kind of fell in love with the way this one was set up.

Wow Wrass - I've been working on an upgrade Rig as well and have been toying w/ the same delima on the Proc. I've actually settled on the Core 2 Duo as well (wolfdale) just because its going to give me everything I need right now and its still reasonably priced (since I have everything running pretty well today w/ some game exceptions).
I think it looks pretty solid. I'm going to check your main board out though - I've been toying w/ about three before I put my order in and now w/ the same proc I might need to add another to look at.

The logic behind my motherboard choice (in case anyone cares ) was that: -It'll run crossfire in X16 (in case I get another 4870) -It is easy to OC -I trust Asus - they make solid boards and are reliable -Sound card thrown in for good measure...what the hell, eh? -Considered one of the best - if not the best DDR2 board out there Cons: -Update bios immediately -May have to set memory speed/voltage manually -NB gets hot and they could have used a better thermal compound to attach the heat sink Look at the newegg reviews...some good replies. This was not an easy choice as well and I do like Gigabyte boards...but Asus is my favorite still.

Hey Wrasse, one more thing...I'm not sure if you are planning to go Crossfire in the future with that rig, but the video card you are selecting uses (2) PCI-E power connectors.
That Thermaltake power supply only has (2), I believe.

wow wrasse, looks like you went all out! I got the e8400. My reasoning was the same on the duo vs. quad. In most cases the duo will out-perform a quad on gaming. Running a crossfire setup? That'll be fun. So far, I haven't been able to make mine lag! (I need to get crysis)

Oh well...I'll probably pass this on to the wife in 6 months and build another anyway.

It is modular...and I have another in my other computer that doesn't use the PCIe connector...wonder if I can just use the cords from that one...wish I knew more about PSUs.

4 replies in a row first? Do I win something?
Anyway, I thought I'd mention since I'm a n00b now at building gaming PCs (It has been 4 years since I've built a gaming rig and I've built more 1U servers recently) that you can, in fact, get by without having all 4 PCIe connectors available on your PSU. The newer graphics cards (and the VisionTek 4870 in particular) come with adapters so that you can fit any old school connection into it to convert it to a PCIe 6 pin connector. This is just an FYI for all of those building systems right now in case you found a PSU you really liked that didn't have all 4 for Crossfire/SLI mode.
I'm still happy I upgraded to the 850 PSU though...probably going to need it.
