So - last summer (August) or so we had a run of thunder storms that took out my Video, when I moved (two or three weeks later) I lost a hard drive. The box I built up was (with only a video upgrade) the one I built for WarHammer's launch! So while I could probably salvage parts not sure its worth it, and am instead looking at a new build.
So any recommendations from MoBo/Vid (either for or against?) I'll probably build it again from scratch (may just re-use the case and PS I've got). I'm an Intel (processor) guy from when i worked in a repair shop so that's really my only hang up.
Also since its been such a long time since i built a system - recommend a good benchmark site (toms hardware is great just looking for anything else). Hoping to get this done up in the next month and get back on-line a bit more regularly.
Finally - toying with a laptop (Say alienware or the like) I'm only about 10% sure I want to go this route (heat and limitations for the future kill me for the cost i would sink into it) but any good arguments the other way?

I can't give recommendations on benchmarking, but pcpartpicker.com is your friend four the build. Personally, I've always been an Intel and nvidia guy. I would go desktop, its just easier to upgrade.

I agree with fluxay. My preference is Intel/nVidia. And that website is amazing. Not all the prices are going to be the absolute cheapest, but it gives you some good input on how much variance there is in the prices.

Microcenter in Mayfield Hts still has some of the best Intel CPU/Mobo deals around, Kaar. I bought the core parts for my last rig there.
EDIT: last 2 builds, come to think of it...

In addition to pcpartpicker.com/ I will leave another reference site for PC Parts. It has a nice visual style and can give you a quick reference point on the total price for a new build, as well as showing what each part costs. I also like the mouse-over images it provides. www.logicalincrements.com/

If you know what parts you're after, or even generally considering, try NewEgg. I built my current rig there.

Lots of guy's here say the same - I had a bad run in w/ Microcenter when I worked for a competitor. We ran out of PS and I went down (new guy) to buy a couple of them until our order came in. Exact same model we were selling 3x the price and the sales guy was a complete douche when I asked for 3 of them. That was back in '95 or '96 and I know I really shouldn't hold grudges about that experience but the 3x cost always threw me and tends to be the last place I checked as a result. Maybe I need to just build a bridge and get over it.

I'm on team Intel/Nvivia as well. I just never have good luck with AMD drivers. Reddit's PC building forums are often a good source of info on best bang for your buck: www.reddit.com/r/buildapc
