Will it be noticeably faster than my 2007 system? I gotta do some research though. Apparently the mobo they got didn't work with the processor, so they had to use an old processor, then do a firmware upgrade, then they could do the processor they bought. I can't do that crap. It all has to work.

performance wise i might i have gone with an i7 processor, but it sounds like that also means a different motherboard.
also, 8 gigs of ram seems low, even my laptop has 16.
i also use my computer for movies, but not so much for local storage, so I might have spent less on hard drives, and gotten a blu-ray player instead of a dvd burner. but that has more to do with usage than performance.

Winin, it will crush your 2007 system. As for the mobo/CPU combo, might be a good idea to look online for a combo on sale. Newegg.com, etc often have mobo/CPU combos that aren't too terribly expensive. I agree with Trap on the i7 & 16Gb recommendation, but if budgeting is an issue, i5 & 8Gb will work quite well. I have an i5 w/ 12Gb and have never had an issue. I definitely agree on the optical drive, however. Unless you find you're burning a lot of DVDs, a Blu-Ray *player* rather than a DVD *burner* is the route I'd take as well. One last thought: scrap the $60 OCZ SSD. They've had far too many issues with firmware. I strongly suggest you keep an eye out for a 128Gb Crucial M4 or Samsung 830. Prices are regularly $80-90 these days, and you'll get twice the storage for only 30% more money, and it'll be a much more reliable (and faster) drive to boot! (pun intended) EDIT: At a minimum, if you're going OCZ, go with the Agility 4 line. Here's a 128Gb for $70 after rebate: www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?SID=ChpJJux-EeGCyurs-pUvpQIeD_0_GFJ_0_0&AID=10440897&PID=1225267&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-cables-_-na-_-na&Item=N82E16820227807 I still say go Samsung or Crucial though for the best reliability/Gb/USD.

I don't really play games that require the cutting edge stuff, so I think I'm OK with saving a few hundred bucks on processor/RAM/Video Card. I want good though. I agree re: SSD. Not critical now and something I could add later. I don't burn DVD's though I occasionally rip them. I'll look at a BluRay drive. I went through New Egg using the i5 as a starting point and came up with this build: secure.newegg.com/WishList/MySavedWishDetail.aspx?ID=27864348Is there anything obviously bad (specific manufacturer, part to be swapped, etc) aside from the ones mentioned already? For instance, if I'm not overclocking/tweaking, should I get a different i5 CPU?

I can't comment on hardware manufacturers, so I'll leave that to the others. My rule of thumb would be to go with stuff that's 4 stars or higher and not worry too much.
