CoT 4 Year Anniversary - March 30, 2007, Friday
It only comes around once a year. We need to plan an event for our 4th Anniversary. A discussion will begin soon on our message board. Your input is needed.
Personal Gratz
1/25 Gratz to Aruth and his wife on their new daughter, Isabelle Rose! She's 8lbs even, and 20" long. Her big brother Dominic Alexander is very proud! Pics are up in the guild area of the message board.
2/22 Happy Birthday wolfborn
2/26 Happy Birthday Jaidan
Welcome Back Rodrin!
Rodrin was CoT on Emerald Dream while we were there and Aruth has bribed him to come over to Silver Hand with us. His name is now Barrick, but it's the same guy. You may also remember him as Galendril on Tribunal in EQ and played a minstrel named Galen in DAoC. Because Rodrin/Barrick already went through the initiation period on Emerald Dream and technically he didn't leave the guild, he's welcomed back as a Guild Member. Glad to have you back with us!
New Welcomes!
Dagmarr is a real life friend of Aduras and Danti. She's been playing D&D with them for the last 2 years. She enjoys playing RP games on her Xbox from time to time and is proud to admit she's a gamer geek. She's a Night Elf Hunter rising quickly through levels. Dagmarr is currently an initiate.
Lucanius is the nephew of Aruth, a Night Elf Druid and a new member. He's new to WoW, but advancing well. He's also younger than most of us (13) so watch the language and certain topics when he's online. Basically the old Oweo etiquette for those of you who were guilded when Oweo was a youngin. Lucanius has gone through the initiation phase and is a guild member!
Ab was on the News!
1/9/07 - Aberrant was on Fox 2 News in Detroit. For those that didn't catch the story on our message board, Ab is a psychologist and works with developmentally delayed children. One of his kids, a boy named Jaiden, has a very rare chromosomal disorder - it's so rare that Jaiden is the only one in the state of Michigan with the condition, plus he is also autistic. As you can imagine the child faces many difficult challenges because of his condition, but it doesn't stop there. Jaiden's mother is a single mother and she has had to quit her job in order to provide the therapy that her son needs on a daily basis. In the year that she has been home with him, providing this constant care and support, Jaiden has made remarkable progress. The problem is that now her funds are running low. They receive assistance from the state, but not enough to keep their modest home. Changes for Jaiden are extremely difficult. The new home that the state can provide is too small for the child's therapy equipment. They currently live in a three bedroom home - the son has one room, and the other two rooms are for his equipment and the mother sleeps on the couch in the living room. Ab was briefly in the story to add credibility. Ab stated that moving for this child would be devastating, setting him back in the accomplishments that the son has made in the last year. They ended the story with trying to set up a fund for donations.
Many of you were concerned about this family, so here is an update: As of a couple days after the story ran, they only received $100 in donations from the fund, but her mortgage company has waived her January and February payments, and the land owners have waived her lot rent for January - March. The mother was using this time to send her story to Gov. Granholm and other state representatives in order to request special assistance. Jaiden is the only person in the state with this condition so obviously he does not fit into the assistance programs that are already in place. Hopefully special considerations can be made for this wonderful boy.
Eternal War Guild Coalition for Warhammer: Age of Reckoning
Morg'th from Only-WAR.com has been very busy. When you go to the Only-WAR forums, you'll notice that there is a new WAR Trade Forum area for Crafting, Sales and Want-Ads. These areas are for in-game selling/buying/trading. No real money stuff. It's very exciting to see in-game stuff begin setting up in the community.
As you may or may not know, CoT is part of The Eternal War guild coalition on Only-WAR. This means that we have agreed to play on whatever server the Only-WAR community begins on. The officers of CoT have discussed this and we believe that this is a great opportunity for CoT to begin on an RP server that already knows us and has a strong and helpful community started.
The WAR Room area on Only-WAR has also been made much larger with some private forums!
There are 3 new areas:
1. Only-WAR Server Destruction (open to all destruction on the server)
2. Only-WAR Server Order (open to all order on the server)
3. The Eternal War Forums started! (open to guild leaders of destruction and order on the server)
Those of you from DAoC/Albion/Guinevere probably remember the Albion United board. Think of these private boards as similar to that concept.
Depending on which side we choose, we will have access to either the Order or Destruction forum and that area will only be open to people on our server. We will be able to communicate and plan with our realm mates without our enemies prying eyes.
Currently The Eternal War area allows the guild leaders of both sides to communicate. I think this is a great idea. Because people are guild leaders and Morg'th and Ked are strict on making sure discussion stays civil on their site, this can be a great tool for bringing the whole server community together and really making reputations matter again in mmorpging. Currently, only I have access to this area, but as we flesh out our leadership (CoT plans to have 4 co-leaders in WAR, currently Ab and I are 2 of them) I'll talk to Morg'th about stuff. It's not an issue until much later anyway.
I think it's really exciting to see our server's community start to build! Even though we don't know the name, we have a great foundation already.
CoT will be choosing a side (Order or Destruction) after all of the classes are released so that we can make an informed decision as a group.
If you are not a part of the Only-WAR community, I would recommend that you introduce yourself and begin checking things out. Many regulars there will be our server community. www.only-war.com/
WAR NEWS
There were ALOT of articles on Warhammer: Age of Reckoning and the January Newsletter has come out! There is a ton of info, and some of it has been covered and recovered in older interviews, but here are some interesting pieces you may have skimmed over:
Andrew Park, Gamespot:
* ...the game actually models geometric collision, which is a fancy way of saying that characters can't walk through each other. Therefore, PVP battles seem to share something in common with tackle football (the American kind): In order to get at the vulnerable quarterback, you need to get past a couple of big, thick-necked linemen.
* As a squig herder, it behooves you to get far away from the big, axe-wielding dwarfs, preferably onto a parapet or raised platform, and rain death down on them from above. By carefully picking our spots (and trying to stay out of sight, in some cases), we were able to land some key shots on our enemies, rooting them to the spot so that they couldn't flee the big orc bruisers on our team.
* In all cases, EA Mythic is building the game around fast-paced, satisfying battles that can be fought and won without requiring a time commitment of dozens of hours on end.
* From what we've seen, the game seems to be coming along extremely well. Now that we've been able to see and play more of the game, it's even clearer that Warhammer Online has a ton of promise both as an easy-to-pick-up game for beginners looking to kill a few monsters, and as a hardcore, squig-eat-goblin competitive game that will offer fast-paced, satisfying PVP battles.
lepidus, Warcry :
* Despite its amazing early stage, the game blew me away. If they can keep on track and tie the parts together, there is no reason WAR won't exceed the hype.
* Half way through my time in their starting area, Barnett snuck up behind me and asked me if I'd heard the swearing yet. I had not. With forty computers in the room, everyone had the sound off and a headset on the desk. For whatever reason, I'd not put mine on. He told me to click on NPCs as I ran around, so I put them on and when to town. The Empire is a land of mean, stressed out people who are valiantly trying to withstand the epic forces of Chaos. Click on someone and their likely to curse at you in a very British way.
* A neat feature of Warhammer Online that ties into silhouetting is the concept of characters growing in relation to their power. ...Chaos mutate.
* The tasks were all simple, but unlike the "kill five wolves" that somehow starts every game, it felt like I was in the fight and contributing to the evolving story and good of my people.
* We didn't get to see it, but their esteemed Creative Director did tell us a tale of how [the Chaos capital city] may or may not include (he may have been kidding, I couldn't tell) a stairwell that never ends, which a poor artist has been texturing for three months. I certainly hope he's kidding, if only for the health of that artist, but one never knows.
* We only got to see two scenarios, but I must say they floored me. These scenarios evoked the kind of emotion I'd only ever experienced in online FPS games and that was with teammates who I couldn't identify and a character I cared nothing about. Throw in some attachment and this has the chance to be spectacular.
* [Paul Barnett] has no illusions though. The MMO genre is defined by World of Warcraft. He told me that World of Warcraft is like The Beatles to this genre. But just like popular music of their era, everyone needs an alternative. To him, Warhammer Online is Led Zeppelin.
Jeff Woleslagle, Ten Ton Hammer:
* My initial concerns were that a strategic tabletop game wouldn't transition well to a first-person MMORPG, but I was clearly ignorant both of the depth of lore in the Warhammer license and of EA Mythic's drive to make an MMO with a robust RvR system that may make the strategic, epic nature of classic Warhammer come together of its own accord.
Jeff Hickman:
* "We have about 150 people working on the project, which is massive, especially for us. I think when we launched Camelot we had 28 people..."
* "...the real goal is to help your realm. ...there's always this feeling that "I need to defend this land, I need to defend my city, I need to bring this fight to the doorstop of my enemy" - you always have that feeling. And that's the part that's really hard to imagine for people who haven't played Camelot especially, because Camelot's the only one that's been able to do this. The relic system, the feeling of "that's mine, you're trying to take it from me... you can't."
"That's the feeling that we're going to have in Warhammer. That feeling that I am loyal to my realm, I almost feel obligated when I see that area is under attack, that's my area, I need to go help my realmmates with that. While you and I in our realm might squabble over a PvE battle, when the call to war comes up, I guarantee you that we're going to both run out side by side and defend the realm. That's the difference. It's easy to verbalize it to you, but you really don't get it until you get out there and play."
* "We're not going to have buffing classes. You can buff, but it won't be like there's one guy who stands around and throws buffs at people. We want everyone to feel like they have a place in the fight."
Garrett Fuller, MMORPG.com
* The gameplay we saw was much smoother than the video that was released in the newsletter a few weeks ago. For those who thought the video was choppy, the real thing was not.
* Another exciting feature in Warhammer Online will be all of the elements that guilds will have at their disposal. When asked to describe it, Lance said to think of Dark Age of Camelot, only bigger. As an example, in DAOC when your guild or group captured a keep, the guild flags of the person who did the capture flew from the towers and NPC guards with your guild symbol patrolled the area. Hopefully, this type of guild interaction within the game will make the leap into W.A.R., but with some new enhancements.
John Walker, Eurogamer
* "It's easy for players of WoW to look at our game and say, 'What are you giving me that I'm not getting elsewhere?'" says Jeff. "And it's really important for those people to hear about RvR." For once, this doesn't appear to be puff. Having sat down and played Warhammer for a day, as much as I might have had my cynical doubts, this really is distinct from Blizzard's cash-Tauren.
* The Empire's Warrior Priest is a healer, but don't expect to be standing at the back, bored. He gains his aiding abilities only through the violence he's giving out and receiving. There's no background characters in Warhammer, and as such everyone's involved in the fight.
* ...when you die, your gravestone might be left there. Your gravestone could have funny things on it about who killed you and how.
* ...we're not letting high-level characters come down and gank low-level characters. We're in fact pushing back against things like that. Say a fortieth level character comes into a fifth level zone, and he wants to run into an RvR area and kill the fifth level guys? Well, not only can he not attack them, but he doesn't even get flagged for RvR. He can't attack the low level guys at all. But that guy who comes down has a debuff placed upon him that makes him vulnerable to the low level guys. This is the kind of disincentive against griefing we're using.
January 2007 WAR Newsletter announced many things, but one highlight:
The final Chaos class is announced: Marauder. "He's a great big Viking who's gone bad … a crab-clawed hulk! They are dead good! Marauders rock!"

ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING! I LOVED IT. I was eating soy ice cream (imagine that , eh?) and actually had to put it back in the freezer after the first scene. Anything that can make me loose my appetite for ice cream must be good. I've been thinking a lot about "play" piercings (temporary piercings, I know a lil much for you guys) corsets and whatnot. but after one scene in that movie *shutter* I've completely changed my mind. You'll know it when you see it.
You gotta watch it!
Winin's Writing & Photos
I've started putting up some writing samples on my website. I have two short stories so far, but plan on adding more (I have a bunch of humor pieces I've written over the years). Enjoy, and pass it on to your friends (or enemies if you don't like it). toddcedwards.com/index.php/Main/WritingSamples
So, I like to take landscape photographs and then I put them together in a calendar that I give out for Christmas every year. I take hundreds of photos and have to find the best 13 (damn that lousy Smarch weather). I have found that the things that make me toss a photo are: bad framing (part of a tree floating in from outside the shot) and lighting (a black spot caused by shade in the middle). When I was playing Vanguard in beta, I ran around taking screenshots, and when I did it at high resolution/high graphic effects/no user interface, I realized it was pretty much what I do when I'm out photographing. So I created the geeky virtual world photography image gallery. Check it out, pass it around, post some screenshots, etc. mmophoto.com/
On my writing website, I added a photo gallery of the pics I took and used in my yearly calendar. toddcedwards.com/gallery/
WoW & Silver Hand Server Split
The possibility of a server split seemed eminent as queues reached into the 600s, but recently that has subsided, due in part to the optional server transfers that Blizzard offered to new servers. Should the issue be raised again, we will choose to go with whatever server Fist of the Heavens chooses. I'll have to rely upon the combo guilded folks to inform us as soon as possible.
January's Guild Position Highlight: Initiates
This title is for people who wish to join the guild and have obtained a sponsor. They are on probation for two weeks. During this time, they must be in game regularly and group with guild members or initiate time may increase.
LET'S HEAR IT.
CoTers are not known for being wallflowers. If you would like to make your opinion heard, in the form of a column in our newsletter, please e-mail circleoftrust.guild@gmail.com.
