I've never tried the game, but no monthly fee is pretty attractive. I looked up the game on ebgames, and well, there is a lot of packages. What would be recommended to get?

I just got Nightfall, but if you don't have anything, you should probably get the all-in-one pack for $50.
I started a new character to go through the Nightfall Areas. Winin Bashir is my new dervish.

Does anyone know a site with good descriptions of the classes? I have a ranged spell caster, so I'm looking for a good melee combo. I'm thinking Dervish/something. Monk? Necro?

Not sure about a class site, but Monks and Necros seem to go well with everything. I have a level 20 Scout/Necro that I am very happy with.
I also have a dervish/monk, probably around 10 or so, and he is pretty tough.

I get most of my Guild Wars info from three different places: The fan Wiki has the deepest depth of information but is somewhat slower to update. The official Wiki has less depth of information but is quicker to update on new goings on. The PVX Wiki branched off the fan Wiki some time ago and is solely devoted to character builds. It makes use of the in-game "Templates" feature that allows you to instantly copy/paste builds directly from the Wiki into the game. Once you see this functionality in action you will be amazed As for actual builds, there are a few "classic" builds that devoted fans keep going back to over and over again. Even if you decide to go with a different main character these make awesome Hero NPC builds. Some of the "Classics" are: Necro/Mesmer "Spiteful Spirit" build. The legendary "SS Necro" that utterly decimates computer-controlled mobs. Elementalist/any "Searing Flames" build. Big time fire nukes like the Bright Wizard in Warhammer. Ranger/any "Barrage" build. Plays like a Shadow Warrior in Warhammer with devastating ranged AOE. Warrior/any "Triple Chop" build. I use this build on my main. Plays like a cross between an Ironbreaker and a Slayer in Warhammer. Monk/Mesmer "Life Bond" build. One of the most popular PvE healer builds, let your friends or NPCs do all the fighting for you, while you keep them alive. Hopefully this gives everyone a few ideas, I've got a lot more to add on how to actually ACQUIRE the skills for these builds if you want me to elaborate later on

Cool. I will definitely talk to you at some point about acquiring the skills. That is something that I am still not too sure about, as I only play casually for periods at a time. I am sure my Ranger main is still missing a ton of abilities that people consider to be necessities.

I am sure my Ranger main is still missing a ton of abilities that people consider to be necessities. What we should do is schedule a time so that I can help you acquire Barrage. In my opinion it's the single best Ranger PvE skill and even better, it's available in all four Guild Wars campaigns, unlike some of the other "Best In Class" skills. (For example, my favorite Warrior skill, Triple Chop, is only available in Factions.) As a general rule of thumb, there are three ways to get skills to use in your Guild Wars builds: 1) PvE - Skill trainers in towns (normal skills) and Capture Signets off defeated boss mobs (elite skills). 2) PvP - Via Balthazar Faction, a pseudo-currency obtained in PvP fights that works vaguely similar to the Medallion system in Warhammer. 3) Capitalism - pay an extra $10 per campaign of your choice to the makers of Guild Wars to buy a "Skill Unlock Pack" that circumvents methods 1 and 2 above.

(actually played the beta for it a bit) I played in the beta but not once it went live, so I have no idea of the point of the live game. Is it all just gang-fights in PvP, or is there a quest structure, or...? The beta seemed all about getting into the PvP live areas, with the quests and backstory almost non-existent.

Is it all just gang-fights in PvP, or is there a quest structure, or...? The beta seemed all about getting into the PvP live areas, with the quests and backstory almost non-existent. I played the beta as well, and the game has changed in SO many ways in the last four years. It's definitely not all just gang-fights in PvP, although if that's what you like, you can totally play the game that way, and in fact it even represents one potential path to character advancement. But the game now has four distinct PvE campaigns which have improved in quality over the years. They have what I would term a "traditional" non-MMORPG feel to them with cutscenes and nicely done character animations. There are also in-game festivals every few weeks, the next one upcoming will be the Dragon Festival on the Factions starter island which happens every year on 4th of July weekend. Probably the single biggest improvement in the game since beta/release was the introduction of Hero NPCs in Nightfall two years ago. You give them custom builds/equipment/spells and can even order them around the battlefield using some pseudo-RTS like controls. You are allowed to control up to three heroes at a time. Since the standard party size is 8, it's possible to clear virtually all of the PvE content in the game (on regular difficulty, at least) with two live players/six Heroes. For all the improvements there are still three major limitations of the game - 1) The game doesn't feel like a "true" MMO because all content is instanced. You will never randomly run into other players while exploring, all spontaneous social interaction takes place in the cities. 2) No auction house, making money is easy enough in the game but selling surplus equipment is not the preferred way to do it. 3) Engine/terrain limitations which limit the feeling of immersion. No jumping/falling, no mounts, invisible fences EVERYWHERE. Presumably these will all be addressed in Guild Wars 2 but that game is still at least 18 months away by the most optimistic estimates.
