Hey everyone, I am casually perusing the market for a new video card. I was thinking something in the vicinity of: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 1GB DDR5That's just my initial choice from about 5 minutes of research. Anyone else have any input? I know ASUS is more expensive that some other brands, so it's not essential to have their name on it. I just always had good products from them. Feedback/comments/concerns?

I would say $200 or less for right now. Maybe more if the card is amazing.

I would say $200 or less for right now. Maybe more if the card is amazing. For that budget, I would go with a GTX 460. You can find some cards that are factory overclocked by the manufacturer for a little extra power, if you're like me and you don't feel comfortable tinkering with shit like that, they're perfect. If you want to spend another $100 you could bump up to a GTX480 which is comparable to 2 SLI 460's. As for manufacturer I recommend Zotac. They have a 5 year warranty and overclocking software included.

Always been an ASUS fanboi myself, but I'm sure you'll find a good card from Zotac too.

I have a derivative of the GeForce 460 in my new gaming laptop and I'm very happy with it... pretty much handles everything I have thrown at it so far on 1080p. Rift looks really great, in case you were wondering Older titles like Borderlands and Fallout 3 look completely amazing. Based on reviews I've read, pretty much the only things that will bog down a 460 at 1080p will be stuff like Crysis 2 or Starcraft 2 on Ultra quality settings. However, as much as I love my laptop's 460 I do feel obligated to mention that the new Radeon 6870 is beating it in the latest performance reviews, and the ASUS Radeon 6870 is the exact same price ($200) as the 460 on Newegg. So why still go with Nvidia? A lot of what it comes down to is if you are going to use the video card for gaming only or other things as well... Nvidia knows they are losing the framerate war to AMD at the moment so they are adding all sorts of other neat features into their cards under their "CUDA" initiative. So for stuff like engineering/science apps, home theater, and games with a lot of physics/collisions, Nvidia makes up much of the ground they lose to AMD in raw gaming performance. Good luck deciding ;D -Adam
