So today I had the wonderful of adventure of troubleshooting my desktop all day, my last day of break. Long story short, it seems my XFX ATI Radeon HD 4870 is having an overheating issue which causes it to shut down my computer anytime I do anything more stressful than browse a website. This seems like a pretty prevalent issue with the card, so now I need to replace it. So what I really want to ask is, does anyone know of any good cards of equal or better power than that one? My main concern is finding something compatible with my motherboard (Asus P6T SE) and preferably something $200 or less, although I might be willing to go above that if something wows me. Does anyone what the major things I need to look for for compatibility are? And suggestions would be great too.

Are you open to both nVidia and ATI, or do you just want to stay ATI?
4870 was a great card! If you want to get something better than that, and nVidia, I would go with a GTX 480 or better, and I love EVGA. Lifetime warranties and very easy RMA's in case you have some bad luck.
I haven't been keeping up as closely with ATI lately, but I would think a 5770 or better would be a nice upgrade.

Cool beans. ^_^ It is very, very good. I got it with the future in mind! (Replacing motherboards are a pain the ass. ) So all I really need to worry about for compatibility is the PCI slot type then? If so, that makes then much, much simpler than I feared. I'm definitely open to both sides. I've had cards from both companies and they have served me well. One thing I need to check though is if nVidia has something similar to ATI's Catalyst control center. That thing is very, very awesome, and has some nice features for when I go dual monitor or want to force better graphics. Having or not having something similar would definitely influence my decision. I know! I was really hoping to hold onto this card for longer than a year and a half, and bought it with longevity in mind. These overheating issues didn't seem to crop up as a known issue until a few months ago. Thanks for the model help. I am usaully very good with hardware, but the video cards and their crazy model series and number always confuse the living hell out of me. I will definitely check out EVGA; a lifetime warranty is looking pretty good right about now. XD I tend to buy cards fairly new and hold them near forever. Thanks for the help both of you!

I think thats a good choice. XFX is a quality company, and the 5770 is a fine card.
