I feel like a giant. Why? I am typing this on an netbook. Why? My girlfriend is always complaining about the noisefrom my computer. So the other day while at FRY'S I bought a new chip cooler on a whim. I hooked it up. Now my computer no longer works. It sounds like it is booting up but nothing ever comes on the screen.
It is not the vid card. It is not the memory. It is not anything I have tried. Does any one have any ideas of what I may have f'ed up. I am in PC withdrawal and need ideas.

Did you put fresh thermal paste on the chip when you replaced the cooler? All wires rehooked up?

Yeah those wires....some motherboards have a failsafe that the system won't boot if no CPU fan RPM is detected. If the sensor lead is bad, or if there is something not correct with the wiring, then that could cause a problem like what you describe. Have you tried putting the old fan back on, just to see what happens?

I did put new thermal paste. I think I will tear it all apart again and start over maybe I missed a wire somewhere. Or did not tighten something down. I changed cases a few months back. Should have changed the fan then. Thanks for the ideas.

Also double check non-related wires. I know some cases force you to unplug 18 other things just to get at the one thing you want. If you didn't put it together yourself (and thus have a manual) you can probably download one for your mobo to check that all the proper plugs are connected.

Okay I a mad now. Took it all apart again. reconected all wires. TTightened down stuff. Before screwing down the motherboard, I gave it a try and it booted. So then finished screwing the mother board down, reconnectted everything, put back in the cabinet. And would not boot. Thnk it maybe time to take it to a pro.

Maybe you are shorting out on the case? Does your mobo have little plastic standoffs? Maybe some bit of metal is sticking up or one of the standoffs is bad? Tightening it too much? Does it work lying on it's side but not upright (weight of the new cooler is pulling something out a bit)?

It was an EVGA, so it has a lifetime warranty....she had onboard video also, so was able to use that while watiing for the RMA replacement. Got the replacement, put it in, booted up just fine while laying (on its side) on my workbench. Put it back under her desk and it wouldn't boot. Turns out I had jiggled a power cable loose. Made contact while on the side, but not when standing up. My bad!

You would be surprised by all the crazy problems I've found with our robots. A zillion wires and connections and one of them is flaky. But only when the robot is in a certain spot, or when it is too hot, etc. Some take days to track down.

Maybe the extra power required by the new cooler on top of everything else is putting too much draw on the power supply? It would only take a couple seconds to test, just disconnect a couple things like DVD Drives and any secondary harddrives, case fans etc then power back up and see what you get.

Ooh, that's a good one. I had to beef up to a new power supply when I got my new video card. The stock supply was just barely able to handle the equipment that came with the box. And Dell marketed it as great for people who like to upgrade components. I assumed that meant a supply that had room to spare.

So I took all the screws out and it booted right up. The good news is I am no longer on the netbook. The bad news, well, I can only put two screws back in and boot. So it will only work lying on its side. Going to mess with it agin tomorrow night. Thanks again your suggestions were very helpful!!!!

Does this new cooler have a backplate that is touching the motherboard tray?

Heheheh! One of my robots is old (built in 2004), so some of the bearing are going bad. On one of my better days, I got to take a hammer to it. These linear bearing are press fit in with a special device that makes it easy. If you are in the shop. Our bots are the size of SUVs, so in the field you make due. I had to hammer a few of them out, and then hammer the new ones in.
Before I started, I told the customer "now just so you aren't surprised, this won't be a delicate operation." Then I started whaling on the thing. Ahhh, good times.
As for Tony, Are you sure all the holes are lined up? Maybe it is off a bit and when you screw in, the board flexes. You may know this, but the best way to screw them in is to get all of them started just a little so you can wiggle the board and get it seated just right, then tighten them. But try to keep even pressure. So you go around and around tigthening each one more and more as opposed to doing the first one all the way, then the next one all the way, etc.
