It's pretty much a rail shooter... www.massively.com/2010/08/09/the-old-republics-space-combat-detailed-in-pc-gamer/sounds like a level I just played in Toy Story 3 the other nightNow, I'm not saying this couldn't be fun, it's just not what I'd hoped for. But, the one thing that made me cringe was this: "while they'll initially be solo instances only, eventually BioWare hopes to implement PvP and team combat in the future." MMO's have a pretty bad track record for attempting to implement large things like PvP into the game as an afterthought. That said, in a way, I'm just happy it's there at all. Plus I understand that the reason for doing it this way is mostly content control; making the game feel a certain way by limiting what players can actually do with the content. We will see!

Love how you put this under Star Trek That aside, I gotta say I'm pretty disappointed =/. I had high hopes that BioWare would impress me with their Space Combat, but this falls short big time. Not to say it couldn't be fun, but its certainly not what I was looking for, like Slurms.

I'm skipping the stories, avoiding all the hype and am going to just give it a whirl when it comes out. I worry that there is so much riding on SWToR being the MMO to "save us" from the current MMO doldrums that it has no where to go but down. Looking back on what was different about MMOs for me in the past, it's exactly that. I went in completely blind to CoH, getting it solely based on an Amazon recommendation. I knew absolutely nothing about WoW before I bought it other than that it is where all my CoH friends went. Hehe, I didn't even know there was supposed to be space combat....

Yeah, I've tried to keep my eyes shut on alot of SW:TOR stuff but I just know the closer it get's, the more I'll be drooling over details.

I agree completely with you Slurm. This may indeed be fun, but it's not at all what I was hoping for.
As I said on the podcast, given the effort, money and talent that's being thrown at this game, it's bound to be quality, I'm just not sure if it will be a game I want to play.

It really seems like something that will be crazy awesome ONCE...
and then every time you do it, it'll just be "hey, remember how badass this was when I did it that first time?"

It will be like Space Ace or Dragon's Lair. Left, right, up, up, right, shoot, left... I'm guessing it will be like the podrace and turret shooting in KOTOR. An arcade-style minigame which will be fun, but not very sim. That fits in with the themepark style they seem to be going for. It could be fun if you can do it in a group. Someone flying, everyone else on different turrets, or "dogfighting" as a squadron with your ships flying around in a formation.

Better than I'd expected from my lowered expectations considering it wasn't what I wanted?
Sure, let's go with that.

HA, big talk from a Sith. Name one series where you win out in the end Darth Bane Trilogy. Read it and weep. 1.) Path of Destruction2.) Rule of Two3.) Dynasty of EvilHe was only the guy who single handedly destroyed and dissolved the entire Sith Empire and restarted with the new Rule of Two clause. Along the way he slays some of the most powerful Jedi Masters, much to the dismay of the Jedi Council. Bring it on, Jedi scum!
