So, I have this little level 9 hobbit that I made just to farm. Literally, farm, not gold farm. I am working on Maewen's cooking and needed some crops. I really didn't intend to level her, just leave her parked in the shire, farming. I soon discovered that farming is quite the money sink. It takes about 19 silver to learn new crops. I had been sending her money, but when I got down to 2 silver this morning after learning how to do blueberries, I decided to take her questing to earn some silver.
I wander down to the Brandywine River. Wow, look at all the crates and barrels! Inside the crates, the occasional item and copper, but always ale for bartering. Hmmm. I remember seeing horses to barter for! What a find, I think. Well, these things respawn as fast as I pick them up. Finally, I ask in advice: to whom do you barter these crates and barrels? Response: pirate on the Brandywine Bridge. Now I am quite certain I don't recall a pirate on the Brandywine Bridge. So I go to a website. Just north of the Brandywine Bridge is a quest to find a shipwreck and its captain. You need the ale and barrels for the quest and then to barter with the quartermaster. The quest says the wreck is just north up the Brandywine.
Ok. So I set out North. I had no idea how far you had to travel. I am up in level 31 mobs on the shore. I stay in the middle of the river, in order to avoid mobs, thankful that this game doesn't have mobs in the water. After about a total of 10 minutes of travel, a level 29 minstrel sends me a tell.
"Doing the shipwreck quest?"
"Yes."
"Want some help?"
So I think maybe there are some mobs around the NPC that I wouldn't be able to get past. So I take her up on the offer. We literally travel about 10 more feet to the NPC. No mobs there. She asks if I have the crates and barrels. You have to turn in a ton of them. In my joy of discovery of the booty before, I had picked up more than enough. That part of the quest is done, no problem.
The elf tells me, "Now for the second part." It appears it is just turning in at this point. So I tell her, "Thanks, I can just map if you have something else to do." And hope she takes me up on it, because it would be much faster.
"That's alright, I'm bored." I wonder if there is another part at the end...
So we start swimming. Another 10 minutes or so. No encounter with any mobs. I am actually leading the way. I get to the quest giver first and turn it in. After you do this, you can trade with the quartermaster who is standing right there. You use the same barrels of Cram and Ale that you picked up.
You get a gray level 7 hat and eyepatch... Oh, and they bind on acquire. My bags are still full of the barrels and ale. So I buy like 4 of them because at least they sell to the vendor for 1 Silver.
"No fair! How many did you get?!"
"Haha! Seems like a lot of work to dress like a pirate. At least they sell for 1 Silver."
"I'll give you 15 silver for an eyepatch and a hat."
No response from me. I don't understand. All he has to do is trade for them.
The elf gets there and turns in his quest.
"I want to send them to my brother's characters."
"oh, you were serious? I'll give you a set for your help..."
So I open up the trade window and this is where I discovered the items are in fact bind on acquire. So I close the window.
"Sorry, can't trade. They are bind on acquire." Long pause. So I have some extra barrels and ale. I don't won't to do the quest again on another character, it wasn't worth it. I open up trade to give those to him so he can purchase his own pirate hat and eyepatch. Let him figure out that he can't mail them to his alts...
He cancels the trade. He doesn't want the ale and and barrels.
"I didn't get anything!" Looks at me.
"You didn't?"
"No! I did all that work for nothing!"
Pause.
"Give me an eyepatch and a hat."
"They are bind on acquire..."
"I want to send them to my brother's characters."
"You can't mail them."
"Eh?"
"They are bind on acquire." I link them to show.
"I did all that work for nothing!"
Very long pause. Surely he doesn't think I am going to pay him for swimming with me, especially since he volunteered to help.
"The quartermaster won't sell them to you?"
"What quartermaster?"
Mind you, we are at a camp with 2 NPC's, one with a flag over her head. I point to the quartermaster.
He gets his hats and eyepatches. Puts them on. Turns back to me.
"Can I have the crates and barrels?"
Sigh.
I open up trade and give them all to him. Let them clog his inventory.
"Safe travels!" And I log out.
