My impressions so far. Only able to play single player on the first 2 missions (like the old demo), and no extra features. Can't talk about realism mode yet (god that looks insane).
The Good:
Very tight controls still. Just had to re-tweak it so the game had the same mouse sensitivity and video options that the first one did.
The aiming, especially while moving has been drastically increased. While not realistic (ffs there's zombies), you still have a margin of error if you are not standing still or prone (margin of error is realisitc, but the first one's was insane with some weapons), especially with a rifle.
New guns are crap in your pants awesome. Auto shotgun still tears through things and the silence uzi makes me giggle. Still have not found a grenade launcher yet, but I do not think it is in the demo (maybe, only played a couple times.). Along with the new tier 1 guns (chrome shotgun and silence uzi) they still have the old ones available randomly (do the same damage, just different models). Tier 2 weapons are ridiculous. Uber sniper rifle, AK-47, and tactical shotgun....mmmmmm....
New special infected help round out the original 4 which are still in there and add even more of a randomness. Through 2 playthroughs I did not have a tank spawn, however, smoker/spitter or hunter/charger combos can wreck a team just as fast. Plus the jockey is hilarious to watch. He jumps on a survivors head and moves him around towards the zombies. Can wiggle out of it by jamming the movement keys, but it just looks like a mini me is on top a survivor. Male and female special infected also add a nice touch and a good visual change.
Melee weapons. Say what you want, they are awesome. They replace your pistol (never got a second pistol yet) so they don't take the place of your primary gun. Some are just for fun (a guitar?) and some are amazing good (frying pan and machete).
'Unique' infected. Bio hazard suit zombies (take a lot more damage), police zombies (have body armor impervious to bullets, have to shoot in the back), and probably more. CLOWN ZOMBIES ZOMG AMUSEMENT PARK...ok end the clown rage...
Witches that walk around. Have to pay attention even more where you are shooting and they have almost double the health they did in the first one (good thing imo) although hopefully they have eliminated the witch spawns in your path where you cannot juke around them.
New items. Bio bomb, throws a bomb with boomer bile and attracts the horde to a location. Like a reverse molotv, can see this extremely fun with a grenade launcher (was fun as hell with the tier 2 shotgun). If you splash a zombie with the bile they are attacked by the horde! Adrenaline, move/shoot/melee faster for a period of time (can carry this or a pain pill) and Shock Paddles (for player character only, can revive a fallen teammate instantly with health).
No chainsaw available in demo but assuming it is the same as the others but can keep it 'revv'ed' for maximum carnage.
Can blow off an arm and the zombie will keep running towards you. Legs are an instant kill like head shots.
New characters Nick and Ellis. Nick is a southern hick and Ellis is a good old southerner thief type. Nick's dialogue is hilarous. Ellis reminds me a lot of Francis.
New panic events. The one in the demo is you open a door a trigger an alarm. Have to run through a maze of dry wall and fencing and scale up ladders (all the while zombies are pouring down around you) to shut it off. After you shut it off, it triggers even more zombies to come. You can get hosed bad if there's a smoker or a spitter (I can see this even being a nightmare in versus).
The Bad:
AI. Good lord the AI is terrible in the demo. When you get pounced/smoker pulled/charger pummeled sometimes they just sit there and watch you die. Very frustrating. Hopefully they get it fixed.
Graphics don't seem quite as good as the original to me. Most of the zombie models just have blood smeared on them. Others are missing limbs etc. Maybe just not used to the outdoors yet but it just doesn't have the same grainy, feel to it.
New characters Rochelle and Coach (I'm not racist I swear!). Their dialogue is terrible. They play the fat card a lot with Coach and Rochelle just doesn't mesh well. Honestly I would have liked a lot more dialogue.
How ridiculous the smoker still is. Smoker was the best special infected (SI) from the first one and I think still is. It is amazing how 1 SI can completely wreck your team if timed right with a horde or a tank/other SI. Spitter comes extremely close. Spitter spits huge pools of acid on the ground and when they die they release a pool as well like a smoker's smoke screen, but it actually hurts....a lot...also like aliens (and they kind of sound like them).
The Awesome:
Ammo. Not the fact that its everywhere just the smallest tweak makes all the difference. You get around 1/3 less shotgun ammo than you did in the first one. Good to me since they seemed to have unlimited ammo. Also for the automatic weapons (tier 1 and 2) you have around 50% more ammo. Which is another good thing since they always seemed to run out of ammo right after you picked them up. Also you can defeat certain 'unique' zombies for weapons. Police zombies will sometimes drop a nightstick (which is a shitty melee weapon, but hey, its a melee weapon that swings fast).
Honestly after all the waiting, I am extremely excited about this game. The only bad that really concerns me is the AI, but they have time to fix that for the PC version. Xbox/PS3 version apparently does not have this issue or is extremely minor.
Now...back to Torchlight...oh how I have missed you...
