Bummer. Even with swapping power supply and motherboard, the machine is still fubared. They're shipping a new CPU and hopefully will get it installed by Thursday.

That sucks. Sounds like you are getting good use of the Dell warranty though.

My PC is still fubared after: 1) motherboard was swapped 2) power supply was tested with another one with same result 3) CPU was swapped out and a new one was put in place 4) ?? 5) Dell is swapping the WHOLE PC for a brand spanking new one. 6) wait 10 business days for the new one to arrive. That sucks, but at least, I would have gone thru all the painful process and got out of it, I hope, a better person

that is awful....which is why I avoid prebuilts like the plague. Most of the time I can find the problem in my comp quickly.
Only prebuilts I would consider are Alienware, but I heard they got bought out so not sure their quality is what it used to be

I have had it both ways. I had my brother help build a machine and it kept wanting to catch on fire.
I bought Dells about a year+ ago, and at least you have the security of knowing they will replace whatever is garbage.
Bummer either way Aube, maybe 10 days is the max it will take to get to you.

This isn't particulary true. In my case, even self built, I would have cost me the moon to get it working again as they tried first to swap the power supply, then the motherboard, then the CPU, etc.... With custom parts, it would have been an expensive experience. Now, I actually get a better machine (QX6800 vs QX6700), faster RAM (800MHz vs. 667MHz) and a free 19" widescreen monitor+speaker (no joke! And I have backups, plus I get a window of 3 days to ship back the old PC, so I can pop the old hard drive and copy the stuff I forgot to backup from old to new machine.

I think what Thrakus is alluding to is the fact that he wouldn't have borked the construction of the PC or used mediocre or crappy parts in his self-built rig that would have died out on you like that. I like the self-built ones because I can control what goes in it and I'm partial to certain MoBo/CPU/memory manufacturers...some even from Canada if you can believe that!! Basically...it wouldn't have gone boom in the first place is what he is saying (I think).

indeed sir. Dell/Compaq and the others are notorious for using shoddy cheap parts in their builds. And they usually give you garbage mem(667 and under). Glad they gave you the 800mhz. Yea I like having my hands in it and making sure it's good stuff, or at least I know where I cheaped out and where to check first lol. I guess I'm kinda like a car enthusiast about comps. Rather just get my hands dirty really. But honestly I can't afford to do it anymore and may have to do a prebuilt since they finance. Or maybe buy piece by piece over the next 4 years rofl.

That's because you got lucky. I had friends go thru motherboards and other components like it was candy. All from places like ASUS and whatnots.

ouch wrasse with the canada throwdown yea you can never totally predict what will happen. Plus if you mailorder you have about a 45% chance of DOA for the delicate stuff. I usually use local private owned comp shops cause they are really good about replacements. Heck the one around the corner will let you bring stuff back even if it did work. They are really cool, decent prices as well and they will test it there and hook it up for you.

I don't have a "decent" computer parts shop where I live. In downtown Montreal, yes, but not on subburbs like Boucherville.
