Yeah, I'm glad I waited.
But wait...how long will blu ray be viable? My buddy has an apple tv which lets him rent hd movies via download. I have ppv hd movies via my cable box.
Is blu ray really worth it?

I like owning the movies and I'm not sure download on demand content is all up to the same resolution and standards that Hi-Def media is at. I'd google it though...many arguments for and against. I bought an HD-DVD player for 100 bucks and got 5 free movies...it's now my upconverting player (not bad for the price) and does a better job (IMHO) of upconverting versus the PS3 so I decided to keep it. I ended up buying a few HD-DVD movies and some are unopened...thought about selling a while back but will keep them and add any super-cheap movies to my collection now that HD-DVD is dying out. As for Blu-ray...I didn't spend much on HD-DVD but just the fact that I bought a few movies (it was a risk I know) and seeing that the format is now dead, I'm hesitant to buy new blu-ray films for the time being (I own a PS3). I'm not sure why...I do think blu will be around for a bit...maybe it's just that there is nothing to buy and my upconverting player does such a good job. Anyway...for those waiting to jump into the hi-def media arena but own a hi-def tele, buy a toshiba HD-DVD player since they are all going to be even cheaper and use it as an upconverting player only. It'll help those standard DVDs to last a bit longer.

Do dvd's look noticeable better on a hd dvd player? My dvd player has component output, and my tv is 720p. The movies look pretty good. Not hd quality, but better than non-hd tv.
I returned my hd-dvd player because it crashed on 2 of the 3 movies I tried (one was a rental, one came with it, and I never played all the way through the one that didn't fail, so it might have crashed later). They are supposed to send me a new player, but now I'm thinking it would be better to get my $$ back.

I can't talk - I've been waiting for the format war to end (my father got left holding a beta and about 200 tapes and I didn't want to get hosed).
But considering they're done producing it, yea - I would get my money back.

In that case, get your money back! You can get a very very cheap player later perchance...but you can't upconvert without HDMI so just get the money.

Well, the replacement came today. Maybe it won't work either and I can get my money back. If not, I'll have to keep it as an upconverter and rent regular dvds. I suspect that watching stuff at home (netflix) will become a very important option in the near future.

NetFlix Saved my life for the first 6 months of my kids life - of course they announced last week (maybe?) that they were only going to care Blu-Ray so regular DVD's from them is all you get from that one.
You have the original receipt? Maybe just return to point of purchase?

It was an Amazon purchase through a 3rd party. And a gift, so it isn't even my credit card. The 3rd party isn't very good at getting back to me.

eww 3rd party ftl its such a pain to work with some people online. I kinda don't like when sites like amazon do the ebay thing. Makes it seem like the people are more reputable then they really are. Send em to ebay where I can distrust them correctly
