So it was working fine this morning, then this afternoon I logged in, then hit play, then got a black screen. Task Mgr shows GW2 Not Responding.
I tried everything I could find (rebooting, repairing the application, removing my gw2.dat and downloading it all again, turning off my virus checker) but no luck. I've submitted a ticket.
In the mean time, I got to reading the forums and from what I read, the high level mesmer may not be my thing. So...
A) Got any other tips to fix it?
B) Got any links to classes to help me choose? I don't want twitchy play, so preferably ranged without a lot of micro managing. I like to heal, but it seems to be melee healing mostly. Maybe necro? What is good for dungeons and open world pvp?
thanks!

1) That sucks and I have no idea how to fix it.
2) I guess necro would be closest to what your asking. Ranged and dungeons tend to favor opposite classes, but the good thing about GW2 is that you can use some ranged on any class, with varying degrees of effectiveness.

Not sure on the black screen thing, especially if you didn't make any changes in between game sessions.
As for the class, Zeli may be right with the Necro, but you might try Engineer or Ranger as well. Ranger is very low micromanagement.

My initial reaction was Ranger, but the dungeons thing I'm not sure about. My ranger-gal is only 21 and she's only 21 because of an auto-level-to-20 booster.

Rangers are pretty good in dungeons. They have one of the best condition removal tools in the game.
Honestly, everything will work in about any aspect of GW2. Everything has some amount of ranged (like you said) and everything can heal to some degree. The trick is knowing how you personally like to play and then finding the weapons and traits to match.
Even me personally, I was looking at builds for my necro the other night and found one that was effective, but wasn't comfortable for my style of play. Then I spent an hour looking over traits and thinking about what I wanted to physically do with the class in game during a combat scenario and I worked out something that felt good. Is it as effective as a meta build? Probably not, but the meta build isn't effective in my hands anyway.

I rebooted a few more times and the problem mysteriously went away. /shrug
Thanks for the suggestions. My daughter has a ranger that she noodles around with sometimes, so I'll play it and see how it goes. I tried a few levels of necro and elementalist. I liked the elementalist and have gotten to level 10. Seems like a good mix of dps and healing.
Another question, I'm level 10 and my bags are full of armor, but I can't find any salvaging kits for sale. The general merchants only have 4 slot bags. The web says they should also sell the kits. Did they change something about that?

The merchants in the low level areas lack basic supplies such as salvaging kits, harvesting tools, etc. I would recommend just porting to Lion's Arch or whatever hub city you have a waypoint for and purchasing your stuff there. Tip: You can enter the Mists (PVP) and port to Lion's Arch for free, saving some money in the process.
Decent bags can be purchased pretty cheaply from the Black Lion Trading Company, and I think some vendors have larger bags (but I always craft my own). I have like 5 10 slot bags in my bank that I could mail to you, if you want them?

Sure, that would be great. I did tailoring on my mesmer, but haven't looked at crafting since coming back.

I've always found that you can buy the bags on the TP for almost the exact same price you can craft them. Those runes of holding pretty much set the price, assuming you are getting the mats from salvaging. Also, if you find yourself doing a lot of salvaging, two tips. One, is the gem store purchase of the Copper fed Salvage o matic or whatever it is called. Second, you can throw into the mystic forge the 3 most expensive salvaging kits (fine, journeyman and master) plus one mystic forge stone (I have a ton of these because they used to give them out for various rewards. Not sure if this true anymore). This will give you a mystic salvage kit, 250 charges. Mystic Salvage KitI like it just for convenience. I salvage all greens. Blues when I run out of bag space. Salvaging will give you luck which will increase your magic find.

Ohhh, I forgot about the Mystic Salvage kits. I'm gonna have to make a few of those!
If you need 20 slot bags, the cheapest way to get them is to buy 3,000 candy corn from the TP, turn them into Candy Corn Cobs and exchange 3 cobs for a Halloween Pail. You can do all the exchanges with a merchant next to the broken Lion Statue in Lion's Arch.
When I did this, it cost 18 copper a candy corn, which came out to be about 5 gold a bag. This is less than the rune to craft a 20 slot bag costs alone!
Also, don't forget you can deposit all crafting materials remotely by clicking the gear icon -> Deposit all materials from your inventory.
