The TP went back up last night, so I was able to buy the ore I needed to break out of the 1-75 bracket. As a result, I was able to finally get into the intricacies of Jeweler, and I must say I'm impressed. Since rings, amulets, etc are somewhat difficult to come by in the game, I thought I'd share a few observations with you all, in the event you want to make use of my crafting skills (currently at about 170, which is level 35 gear).
1. The basic pattern is: ore-to-bars-to-components = item with empty upgrade slot and decent-ish stats.
2. In a separate step, a gem can be converted to an upgrade AND THEN combined with the item in a third crafting step to create a bad-ass item.
Example: silver ore (x16) = materials for a ring + a "filigree" to convert a gem into an upgrade item. If the filigreed gem is combined with the item through the Jeweler crafting process, a better item is the result (compared to just adding the upgrade to the item manually).
3. The discovery process is non-destructive. That is, if someone were to give me, say, 16 ore and a gem and say "make something with x & y stats," even if I'd never made that item before, I could experiment and get a usable item out of it (rather than, say, losing the item to the discovery process)
4. Not all the conceivable combinations appear to be available (say, a power+condition setup), but generally-speaking, the stat combinations are useful.
That may sound complicated, but the reality is that it is a fairly straightforward process. You can ask Vejuz what I made last night for him (2 rings, 2 accessories, 1 amulet—all "green" level) and how solid the stats were. I was obviously crafting, so I had the mats, but say he wanted something when he hits 45. He could mail me 80 ore & 5 gems he knows have a standard stat-pairing, and I could whip up an entirely new set that absolutely crushes anything from karma vendors. That could be ore he either gathered himself or (right now) purchased cheaply on the TP. He culd obviously mix and mach gems for various pairings (say he wants some vitality+toughness on the amulet, but wants all precision+power on the rings/earrings).
TL;DR: At least for Jeweler, the crafting process is relatively low-resource for very high results, and experimentation can take place with your mats without losing anything. There are obviously hundreds of recipes, so no need to bother with them here. Just know that in-game, you can ask in GChat (or whisper) and I can link examples of what's possible. Once you know the gem you like, it's just a matter of picking ore for your particular level (the stat pairings are consistent at higher levels, and the quality of the ore and gem = the "strength" of the item).
