In most of these games you need a separate build to be effective in pvp or pve. What's great about this game is that you can have them all on the same character and switch them whenever you want. That opens up a lot of possibilities, and most importantly, it's fun. At max level it might be necessary to have multiple gear sets for different roles, but I don't think anyone's at that point yet.
You can shave a wookie many times, but you can only skin him once.

I did some rifts with my Warlock/chloromancer/necro. Dots and long casting nukes don't go well with raids. I guess I should make one role for solo/duo and one for group which focuses on healing and instacasts.

Well, you are right about the rift thing. Necros and Warlocks are meant for prolonged fights to build their DPS up. Similar to the way Wardens (Cleric) need time to build their Heal over Time abilities on top of each other. When it comes to fast paced rifting action, the Necro/Warlock will be less effective, since your damage is not frontloaded at all. They do shine with boss battled though, as stacking the DoT's tend to do more damage in the long run.
Like Kendou said, the beauty of the soul system in this game is the fact that you can easily have multiple specs to switch back and forth from. Perfect example is my Rogue...For solo work, I use Marksman/Ranger/Saboteur and for groups I use all my points in Bard for support and the remaining few points elsewhere.

You know about the Bard/nightblade synergy, right? Blazing Fury and Unstable State will boost your Cadence damage, and hence your healing.
I recently tried marksman and liked it. Might have to play around with some marksman/bard mixes. I guess you pretty much need ranger for the pet to solo with marksman.

Yeah, but since every calling gets at least one soul with a consistent pet, that's no trouble. As for the rifting versus bosses, yeah, I've had many occasions where I forgot that most rift raids don't bother too much with tanking, and unleashed my true kung-fu, area of effect cabalist spells. After the entire Rift encounter group focused on me a few times I learned to NOT do that again. If it's a big enough rift, and there are enough elite enemies, I can certainly make contributions with all my damage over time spells and channeled effects.
I tried healing a few of those too, just have to spot heal and not get too accustomed to the sentinels' group/raid heal
I just keep expecting a total protonic reversal, especially if there are magi around throwing similar effects out there.
Is that good for us, or bad for us?

That's why I love Choloromancers for healing, just use Veil on either who ever seems to be getting caned and just start throwing out spores and instants and watch the numbers start lighting up...

I ran a Sentinel/Warden a few raids, and found that I got cheesed (like creamed, but more thorough and lasts longer) a lot less by just hitting people with my instacast heals and heal over time spells. Whenever I hit the big 10-Raid member heal, that called all the riftspawn to me instantly. If I could kite them around the main raid group a bit I might be ok, but that seldom happened. I did end up getting more rewards for that than in my DPS Bolt/DoT/Channel build.
I do like healing, I've just been trying the DPS to see a new side of the mumorpugger landscape.
No, in fact, it DOES matter. Because there are two ways to accomplish that task: one is the right way, and the other is whatever the hell you just did.

I tried a marksman with ranger to get the pet. It was just like my old hunter in WoW. Grumpy old dwarf with big beard and hair, and a hog pet. Kinda wish i had screenshots of my old hunter to compare. But that combo seems to be really good at killing for low level. Maybe I'll start with that and switch to bard + stuff later on.

Just use instants and HoTs and you're golden. Almost never got aggro and the cleric is only level 14 and has 2 pieces of rift gear (staff/chest), although I have been doing more rifts than my mage... Also Healing Breath + Spec = win, healing 3 people instantly every 8 seconds and supplementing with quick HoTs/quick heals is really nice and never ran out of mana.
