My other favorite class in MMOs is the bloodmage from Vanguard. They are a nuker/dotter, but they can transfer hp from themselves to an ally, or from a monster to an ally (or to themselves). They also built up "blood points" by doing some attacks, and then use a finisher for big effect (relative to how many bloodpoints they had.
I've spent 0 time on mages in Rift, but I'm going to try tomorrow. What souls should I be looking at for a Bloodmage-like experience?
Thanks!

Looks like maybe Warlock > Chloromancer > Archon is a good combo.

if you are looking for big nukes and dots pyro/necro/warlock would probably be a good combo. Havent tried that combo myself yet though.

I mostly enjoyed taking life from the enemy and giving it to me or a friend. It was a fun sort of micromanagement. Not so much high damage or spike damage.

Any mage will build up charge, then use it for wackiness. Archon is kind of nuts but the buffs are only five minutes each so you have to constantly keep watch on them...wasn't for me, but necro/warlock is a good combo especially since you get a pet to take all the damage for you.

Yeah, looking at a skill calc, I like Warlock with some chloromancer and a necro for pet. Lots of ways to steal life and give it to me or my pet.

On the last Multiplaying podcast, Blue Kae mentioned he played a mage that shoots lightning. I believe he mentioned it was a Stormcaller or Dominator? Either way I know what i'll be testing out tommorrow!

Yea I would definitely go with Necro/Warlock as a "Bloodmage" spec. Alternatively, you could do Warlock/Chloro. The Necro in that case is mainly for the pet in my opinion unless you go higher up into the tree, which gets much more Bloodmage-y abilities. Once you get into the 20's, you've got all kinds of Life Transfer abilities, Life Taps, Essence Link, Blood Binding, etc.
If you want Bloodmage, Necro/Warlock is your best bet. Plus as a bonus, the Necro is the mass pet class...being able to summon small armies in the higher levels.

Ooh small armies sounds like fun. Thanks for the tip. I have my brother, his wife, and dad all interested. They are going to join the beta and who knows, maybe buy into the game.

Necros can summon small armies?? I'm having Diablo 2 flashbacks! How many minions are we talking?

I wonder how they'll handle that. I remember a few guildies in DAOC who ran the Bone-something-or-other, I want to say dancer. Anyway, those guys were the only ones in the game who had multiple persistent pets. You fed your orders to the Skeletal Commander, and it passed them to your other pets.
Glad you found something that looks like a class you enjoyed before, the Warlock Necromancer sounds fun. The lightning mage souls were the Stormcaller and the Dominator; the Stormcaller I haven't tried, but the Dominator has lots of instant cast spells and mez/inc/cc powers.
If you lived here you'd be home by now.

Not at any given time, but with the recharges lining up I will lay it down for you.
Levels 1-50 - Summon Skeletal (insert choice here) - Summons 1 controlled pet. (Your main dude)
Level 26 - Empty the Crypts - Summons 5 uncontrollable Shambling Corpses. A fast 60 second recharge.
Level 50 - Mass Grave - Summons 2 uncontrolled level 50 versions of the Mage's Skeletal Zealot and Shadow Revenant. Lengthy 5 minute recharge.
So, every 60 seconds you can have 6 pets, and every 4-5 minutes you can have up to 8 pets. Add the fact that many of your abilities increase pet damage, and heal you when pets attack. Also, many of your DoT abilities drain the life out of the enemy into an ally or yourself.
Now granted...this is if you go 100% Necro spec, with a small amount into Warlock. Still, by the mid 20's you can sustain 6 pets at a time without the top tree abilities.
OH almost forgot....Necromancers get multiple versions of Corpse Explosion. WIN!

I played a Warlock/Chloro/Necro up a bit yesterday. I like it, but I think I prefer my Bard/Nightblade/Riftblade. All the dots and drains were fun solo questing, but not so good in groups/rifts. It will be a good 2nd character.
