So, Questing seems pretty much designed to hand hold you through the levels and dole out gear at a decent rate, but that is the standard, WOW-solo experience.
Rifts and invasions seem to be fun, dynamic WAR PQ type things. But how do you get gear? Can you just spend your time doing rifts and invasions? How do you get gear? I saw some mention of a vendor who uses drops from rifts as cash for items. Is that gear on par with quest reward gear? What about crafting? Do you need to craft?

The gear from trading in stuff from rifts is superior to pretty much any quest items I've seen (got up to lvl 22). I am using the chest and working up towards the pants (giggity) and that was just casually doing rifts. The items for the really good things need rare drops from the rifts/events which I never saw, but there were a bunch of people that had the items so it is possible. Crafting is ok, you can add in an item (gained through using rift 'points') to increase a stat on the item, like increasing the INT on something or what not. The crafted items lasted me a few levels, but nothing really compared to the rift loot, plus you can also get items for completing rifts in your drop bag so its definitely worth it.
Crafting probably picks up in higher levels as you start getting items to use in crafting (probably blue/purple gear to put it in WoW terms).
There's a lot of different options to advance which is really nice and I had a blast either throwing fireballs in a mobs face or actually healing as a mage.

Right, the higher level rifts and invasions give you the planarite (dropped from pretty much every rift or invasion)and sourcestone (usually from larger rifts or invasions with a named leader, and seems to be based on your contribution) used as currency at the planar goods vendors, for equipment that is generally superior to most quest item rewards.
I tried some of the crafting, didn't take it too far though. Most of what you make at the earlier levels is going to be on par with or inferior to quest rewards, but you can add items to the process to possibly make it better than comparable quest items. You can get these stones from planar essence items which are really sort of a random loot pinata(dammit, where's the little tild thingy). Those types of items are also available as random drops, and sometimes from quests.
The rifts and invasions are much more fun that traipsing around for resource nodes, so I know which I'll try to focus on.

So, I got the preorder with the turtle mount so I can get my rift on instead of questing.

There are also Puzzles and Chests/Mounds of loot in each zone.
They drop a blue/purple and give you gold!

100% of your sentences include slashes. You are dangerously close to earning the title "The Slasher".
