I have a VIP key but I keep getting an error. Tells me I'm not signed up for this testing. They must not have activated mine yet.

Yeah, it looks great and has a lot of potential. I'm really just concerned about the pvp and the skill/power systems. I like pvp, but only when I want to do it, not constantly or right when I'm trying to get some crafting, gathering or questing done, screw that. And as for the skills from the different souls, I hope there are a wide variety of useful builds, rather than just two or three useful setups, as in older versions of Warcraft.
Farewell, friends. Thank you for teaching me to kill again!

There are 8 souls (sub-classes) for each main calling. Every soul serves a specific function in the game. Some are anti-magic users (more geared to PvP), some are pure DPS, some have AoE heals, some are all CC and disables.
What will be interesting is how people mix and match their specs. Think of it like Guild Wars if you played that. Yea, there are some specs that are inherently better for certain situations, but half the fun is seeing the variety!
Also...the dynamic content is awesome. That is all.

Got to play this weekend, got an inquisitor/sentinel cleri to 17. Had a blast, and any time a rift spawned on my head(which seemed to happen rather regularly) all I had to do was be out of combat for 2 seconds, switch from dps to heals and it was on! Also, finishing up a rift just to have 2-3 invasion forces spawn on top of your head gave me that feeling I had back during daoc and youd get backdoored. Good times.

Oak...how did you like the major invasion events? I did not realize that they were not hand catered by GM's until I heard the most recent Rift Podcast. That is simply how their system works. It creates content appropriate for the quantity and level of players online in a certain area and compensates for any fluctuation in these metrics. Quite an ingenious system when you think about it. It keeps working, and continues to make any given zone exciting for any given amount of players online at that moment. During peak hours, you may look at your map and realize the zone is being overrun by Life Rifts! (Each line is actually an arrow that points to where each squad/invasion is heading. Most are going to the Guardian stronghold.)

Maybe game controlled dynamic events will revitalize the genre. Do they feel natural? Do they work?

I've been waiting for GM interaction in dynamic content for years! Damn, its taken this long...
this is only the beginning. I can't wait to see the next generation of MMOs that build on things like this. Looking forwards to Beta 3, I was to busy to play the first 2.

I can't wait to see the next generation of MMOs that build on things like this. Looking forwards to Beta 3, I was to busy to play the first 2. I know of 2 examples where MMO's regularly employed GMs to further story in-game. Earth and Beyond did it with the Vrix invasion, and apparently The Matrix Online had a great deal of GM involvement quite regularly. I'd love to see it happen in a modern MMO.

It feels very natural, and works very well. Even though the GM's are letting the system take over the majority of the time, they are able to pull the levers and make things happen at will as well. It was funny, when one of the zone bosses spawned during a huge invasion heading for the Sanctum there was a system message meant as dialogue that went more or less like this:
Regulus: "Go forth my minion! Take the Santum from the Guardians!"
(players make fun of the mis-spelling of Sanctum in a system message)
Regulus: "You are almost there! Crush them!"
(Players finally defeat the zone boss, and as he dies he speaks his first words.)
Zone boss: "Master....you never told me.....what is....San....tum...."
Made for quite a personal experience.
It does remind me slightly of Matrix Online actually. As Grok mentioned, the GM's had regular appearances in the game pushing the story forward. The interesting thing is that they would interact with any players present and whatever unfolded is how the story developed. I remember being a small part of such a development when a GM was trying to escape from some Agents and the players were trying to save her. As it turned out she was killed by the Agents because not enough people ran to her rescue. I miss that game on some levels, but it just fell to the same SOE demons that ruined countless other MMO's.

So, I know that the whole extreme flexibility thing is wierd...so I took a couple screenshots of what it would look like when you have all 8 souls in a main calling. This is the Warrior Calling setup I have on Pazzolupo. All these screenshots were taken on the same character at the same level, within minutes of each other. This first one is my Tanking Role. I switch to this if I am going to come up against a hard mob or tank for a group. This is my DPS Role, for when I am soloing normal mobs/questing around. This demonstrates the ability to swap a soul out anytime you friggin' want when you are out of combat. Many to choose from as you can see! That's it! Now you know how easy it is to change it up in Rift!
