It looks like SWTOR wants: OSWindows XP, Vista/7 CPU AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4000+ or better · Intel Core 2 Duo Processor 2.0GHz or better RAM Windows XP: 1.5GB · Windows Vista and Windows 7: 2GB · PCs using a built-in graphical chipset, 2GB RAM recommended. Video ATI X1800 or better* · nVidia 7800 or better* · Intel 4100 Integrated Graphics or better* DVD-ROM 8x or better *Minimum of 256MB of on-board RAM and Shader 3.0 or better support.
My processor is a Core 2 (not Duo?) with ~1.96 GHz. I forget when I bought this rig, but I think it's been a few years. Time to look into Tom's Hardware guides. I should probably set up one of those fancy hard drive backup/mirror systems while I'm at it.

ATI Radeon HD 5770 (hope to upgrade early next year) Man I'm still flyin' with the ATI Radeon HD 4870, such a kickass card. Gonna miss it when I upgrade.

I just got a raise, so when it gets closer to release, I'll get a whole new system.

Just saying...looking at the graphical quality so far, you may not need to go crazy. Unless you like to do that, in which case have at it! I usually do when I can.

My graphics card is reasonable, but my CPU is old and busted. That is the key thing to upgrade. That, mobo, RAM, and hard drive.
The question is: can I reinstall Win7 on a fresh machine? I don't want to buy it again.

Even if you only have the upgrade you can install it on a fresh machine. I normally get 3 to 5 installs off one key. If it kicks back the key just call them and tell them you switch cpu's and they will help you out.

Awesome, thanks. That was my big worry. How's the SSD working for you? I may get one of those too.

Using the LOTRO FlashBoost program to offload the 6.5gb of that game's texture files onto a very fast thumbdrive has convinced me that I am most definitely putting an SSD into my rig as a game drive.
