I thought this post was a good read. Although I do not know the person he speaks of, it really took me back to my old memories of DAoC. I think every server had these self-made heroes.

This post may or may not make sense to some of you, but hopefully it'll give you something to think about as far as WAR.
It has the potential to be long, so bear with me, as it's 5 am and I've been up with a newborn and nursing mother.
When I started to play DAOC, it was my first MMO. I simply fell in LOVE with it, I had never experienced a virtual world before. The pure THOUGHT of me logging off of my character and the world actually continuing was amazing to me. Laugh if you must, but for you veterans out there, remember your first---and all the feelings, and awe, and emotions it got out of you. I mean, it was the kind of game, that you would get up "just a bit" early for work just to log on to kill a few mobs, or take that horse ride to a town to get "set up" for that evenings fun Laughing Orc.
(and you know you did this!)
Anyways, on with my story. I was a little level 12 NOOB, not even knowing anything about the rvr that was going on, unaware that when I saw huge, good size groups of players on mounts flying by me, not knowing where they were going, or what they were doing. And I got invited to a guild called Battle Ragers by a level 49 Armsman. I remember looking at his armor, and weapons, and armor dye, and was impressed. It made me want to experience everything in the game at once, to see everything the game had to offer. Because the little pocket of the world I had been staying in surely wasn't nearly as dangerous as what this guy's been through.
The leader of the guild was an Infiltrator named Blender. A true leader in my opinion. Every Sunday the ENTIRE guild would meet at 1 designated spot, and have a meeting. He would discuss the week's events, mainly in rvr, give out promotions, awards, and then all the high levels would do gear hand-me-downs to the low guys. It was an awesome guild, the best one that I've ever been in, in any game period.
What's the point you say?
I remember, as I leveled, seeing Blender in action. On the battlefield. That guy was a ...... machine. He was ruthless, fearless even. And he "knew" how to put himself at an advantage in every single fight he was in. Even if we were outnumbered. I guarantee that more often than naught, Blender would be the only one standing at the end of the fight.
(You have to remember, this was in a time as the game was still learning. For those of you that played DAOC.....this was a time when a lvl 22 would come for a keep defense Laughing Orc) People were still learning how to use tactics, and gigantic large scale battles happened rarely. It was mainly small, skirmish warfare in the frontier. It was a time before Darkness Falls if that tells you anything.
Well, I remember reading the VN boards (I know to not take VN too seriously, I think it stand for Very Negative in my opinion, but old habits die hard) long after I had moved on to other games and adventures, and I came across a post about players that people respected. People were talking about how not only they respected that guy, but enemy realms were talking about how much they FEARED him. Whenever they say him, they knew they were in for a loss. Especially if they were wandering in small groups (he was notorious for being able to take down groups of 4-5 with ease by himself). The thing that impressed me though... was that the post was made more than 2 years after Blender had left the game. He was THAT notorious.
So what does this have to do with WAR?
Well, I'm seeing an insurgence of posts about people worried about gear, items, "I put more time in than you did" and the general feel of this community is that the skill makes the man--that your actions will mean more than your stats. And I'm of that same feeling. But I also feel a hesitation there, a worry... that "what if Mythic doesn't get this right, what if it's going to be another grind clone, where I put in countless hours just to get stats that make me better on the battlefield" and I say "Have faith WAR followers, Have faith that our actions CAN make a difference and skill WILL be what our characters are remembered for"
If Mythic could do it then,........they SURELY can do it now. And I have faith in that.
