Yeah, notch really kicked up the monster spawns. The other morning, I came out of my hole to find 3 spiders and 2 creepers ambushing me. You're going to want to have some food. You put the pork in the furnace, although can eat it raw if you have to. No worms yet.
I haven't tried fishing yet. Anybody have any luck with that?

Fish only give 2 hearts so bacon is still the best way to regain health.
Also didn't he fix the monster spawn with the recent patch?

This is a great tutorial video:
To answer your question, you can either make a hoe and get seeds to plant for wheat to make bread, or (more easily in the beginning) kill pigs to get their meat, which you can cook in a furnace. Put them on the hot bar, select it, and right click to heal.
Edit: Apparently I had forgotten to hit refresh! Hah! >.>
Edit2: I've had great luck with fishing. You can alot of meat very quickly but doesn't restore much health. If you spend a bit of time, you can get a serviceable stock to throw into a chest for healing up at your base. Taking meat is better travel rations though.

Got Wrew and Winin added to the user list.
According to Notch's blog (http://notch.tumblr.com/) there's some updates coming tomorrow. Hopefully there's not client incompatibilities since I probably won't be able to get them applied until evening time.

I've started my little castle/underground fortress. Of course I found a big cavern nearby that I'll need to take over. It keeps going down and down and I haven't hit bottom. Is there an easy way to tell people how to got to your place? /edit While trying to figure out exactly where I was, I stumbled across an awesome site (and sight). My new home is in a natural cave up behind the waterfall.

Best way is just to use signs. 6 blocks of wood across the top, one stick in the middle. The ones built in the side of mountains don't tend to show up much on the generated maps I've found.

Last one we had was man made. Hope this one was just an accident.

Actually, I'm not sure either of these fires were player-made. I ran across a comment on the support forums for Hey0's mod (which is what we're running for security and additional commands) where it's mentioned that there's a bug in the lava code that can spawn random fires. forum.hey0.net/showthread.php?tid=933

I've also noted since the last update that there have been a lot of critters on fire. They seemed to be combusting when the sun came up, like zombies.
And I should have qualified my post in that I don't think any have been intentional even if it was man made.
I know I can speak from personal experience as to how fast wood goes up in flames in the game.
