And that my friends is why an out of 10 review site is not the best place to get information about potential games. How many other times has this kind of thing happened and the reviewer got away with a fast one. This guy didn't even experience over half the game.

I always prefer real player reviews and take those then, with a grain of salt. That's true for movies and books too. While you can still find people bashing it or giving it glowing reviews with the same qualification as this GameSpot reviewer, you can at least find a wider variety of "real people".
Seems like if GameSpot has the policy of at least 30 hours spent in a MMO before a review, someone should have some 'splainin to do.

Gamespot is a sad shell of what it was pre-Gertsmann gate.
And I totally expect the new review will be a 6.0.
I agree, the whole /10 system is a very, very poor way to review games.

I'm glad they pulled it quick, but yeah, next review will probably be a 6 or maaaaybe a 6.5 which is just low enough to still be considered a "bad" review. I often think about the whole review/score system thing. Is there such a thing as a "good" score based review system? Giant Bomb's 1-4 star system works pretty well because it's very much open to interpretation. You almost HAVE to read the article, but it ends up with primarily 3 star reviews. Seems pointless to me, but that may be because I don't really pay attention to it. It's like for people who think $4.99 is a way better deal that 5 bucks. I'd love to implement a score based system on Multiplaying, but one that makes absolutely no sense. Like, "I'm giving this game a score of 3 chinese Elvis impersonators" out of what? is that good?

I actually like the grade scale that 1up uses, but metacritic converts it to a 10 point scale anyway.
IGN's is the most fucked up, by far.
I like Kotaku's system, just listing the "Love" and "Hate".

When I review or read reviews, the most important metrics are: will I keep playing and will I recommend it to friends.

Yeah, the numeric grading system is pretty screwy. I'd rather the reviewers didn't even bother with a numeric score and just listed a few good and bad points they found about the game, then force the readers to acutally READ the review, or not. Numerical scores are good in that they give a quick overview of something, and they are bad for exactly the same reason. Any numeric scoring system has these flaws; I can't count how many papers I graded that were very disheartening to my students, when every wrong answer was a hair's breadth from being correct; no partial credit in that class, Ministry of education policy. Poor kids.
