I like my Sony shiz That was a lame rant. Why did this guy bother to expend the energy in ranting, and not just vote with his wallet? Sounds like sour grapes because he couldn't take advantage of pirated region coded UMD's or somethin'. I've always been satisified with my Sony audio and video gear. I really don't care if they are sacrificing babies in Indonesia, as long as my Sony DVD player upconverts. (Just don't get me started on HDCP....)

You start a topic on a set of speakers and somehow porn gets thrown into the discussion.
Obviously I'm on the CoT boards.
Hey...and I'm a n00b when it comes to some of the new technologies...is HDCP a method of copy protection?
* gets Aruth started *
*edit* By the by...I got the speakers set up and we're preparing our home for the new arrival (the 57831 mit 1080p dlp television)...I still need to run the speaker wire through the ceiling this week or next to mount the surround speakers for the full effect but, from what I've experienced thus far, this system is very nice. I may not compete with systems that are $700+ but I think it may give some a run for their money. For a computer, these things are overkill...but would certainly be sweet...especially if you had your computer set up to blast some music from time to time. I'm happy with the system save for the fact that they should have held the weighted knob in place on the mini-receiver with something while packing it. It came off and scratched the surface a bit on the receiver. It went back on with little trouble and isn't too noticeable...but it could have been worse. Everything feels well made...it was easy to set up...and I like the look of it. I'm happy...one thing I found out...or heard about though is the fact that the THX cert for PC speakers is easier to obtain than that for systems built just for home theater use. I wish I knew more about all of that but it just seems like a way for Lucas to milk some money out of audio equipment manufacturers.

...and on the blu-ray versus hd-dvd...I'm just going to wait I think...I hear new spins on the battle every day.
If the x-box 360 does put out a new version with HDMI ports, I may consider that purchase for a HD-DVD player...or go with the PS3 (since my TV will upconvert and the PS3 doesn't). I'd really like to have a combo player...so maybe by Christmas this year I'll have a next gen player.

I would pick up a combo player if the battle continues to be down the middle. My tv can only go to 1080i, so the HDMI ports weren't too important to me....yet.... I plan on getting a 1080p and make a basement home theater setup when they go down a bit more in price. They actually aren't too bad now compared to even last fall.

Glad to hear your speaker system sounds good! Yes technically its a form of DRM. It's not that I have a problem with DRM (hey, I protect my property too, but I use a Smith & Wesson and a Mossberg)...it's that I have a problem with *poorly implemented* DRM. And thats exactly what I consider HDCP to be. I have a real problem with the 'flag' that downrezzes the HD signal to 540p if all devices in the chain are not 100% HDCP compatible. Has NOTHING to do with whether the device is capable of displaying the full resolution of 720p/1080i/1080p. Here is some HDCP info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDCPThe links at the bottom of the page are very good. And are you saying the 360 *does not* have an HDMI connector? That's surprising. I don't have one, and never looked into it before. So that means if it only has VGA output then any HD-DVD played from the optional player is probably limited to 960 x 540 and not true HD should the content provider flag it. Component supports the same resolution as HDMI....content providers restricting it 'because they can' is ridiculous.

Sorry about going way off topic. That article was mainly a joke btw. Sony does make quality stuff. I just don't like paying for expensive proprietary media like Memory Stick. I havn't made the step to HD.. so I'm not in the blu-ray/hd-dvd battle yet. Right now I'm loving my 100 inches of 480p through DVI. I've directly compared it with my friend's 52in 1080i Mitts. My setup makes up for its lack of resolution with superior picture quality. ;D I hope you enjoy that HT Wrasse. You should throw some pictures up when its all done.

The current iteration of the 360 (and the HD-DVD drive add-on) uses component cables to connect (there is no HDMI but there are rumors...some say confirmed but I havne't looked recently...that a new version is in the works with HDMI...not sure which version of HDMI). I think you can only get 720p with the component cables but can attain 1080p through the vga cable connector in back IF your TV supports playback at this resolution through it's DVI/VGA input (I guess it just shows computer res 1080p for the playback). It's all a jumbled mess to me so I'm just being patient and waiting...for either a new version of the X-Box or just a regular player. Thanks for the link, Aruth. I'll go check that out. *edit* www.amazon.com/gp/discussionboard/cd/discussion.html/ref=cm_cd_dp_tft_tp/105-3949565-2999602?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&asin=B000JHO4L0&store=videogames&cdThread=Tx1YBYDJZS19OAB^ Where I got my info on the X-Box 360 1080p capability...I can't confirm this though.

Hmmm, I bet you could get 1080i through component on the 360. The Xbox1 can.

I can get 1080i through component cables. There are also a few tv's that can do 1080p through component, but they are the minority.

Cool...I'm just learning what equipment displays what... I was considering getting either a PS3 or X-Box 360 for my HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player knowing at least I'd have a good console if the platform didn't make it...but now after viewing the upcoming game releases for 2007 it's more of a no-brainer. X-Box 360 has some great gaming coming up.
