Yea, I originally opted for the Onkyo 7.1 system (after reading reviews and such on the avsfoums) but it was a bit too large for Ali's tastes...so I passed it on to my father (he got a big discount from the discount I had already received...lucky bastage ). Anyway...I needed something small since the TV I'm purchasing (A 57" Mitsubishi DLP) is rather large (well I don't understand the concept of a television being 'too large' but Ali seems to think it's possible *shrug*)...it's one of those compromises I had to make. heh That set of speakers does look nice...the way I figure it now is I'll buy this set and use it for a bit until I wear Ali down...then I'll invest more on the home theater sound system and move those to my computer. Win-win. I'll bookmark that set for later. Thanks.

I've got an InFocus 4805 HT projector. I've got it 1:1 pixel mapped with a Bravo D1 DVD player. On the AVS forums, there is a cult following for the 4805 paired with the Bravo D1. Then I've got a 2.1 set of Creative speakers lol. They were the $150 dollar ones.. got em half-price. I'm not very picky about sound. I think they sound great. SpeakersMy home theater is sorta ghetto rigged in my bedroom. I like it. ;D

I was going to go for a projector at one point but there is just too much ambient light in the place where the picture will be viewed...my father has a projector setup (although he's got the viewing area too large IMHO)...anyway, I wanted 1080p so, instead, I'm opting for the new Mit 831 diamond series TV. I love the color on the Mit and have always had great luck with the brand. I kinda still hope for a projector setup sometime down the road once we move into a large home and I have my dedicated room for theater stuff. hehe Now...blu-ray or HD-DVD...that'll be my next delimma...I could always get a PS3.

They say that Sony is going to kill Blu-ray the same way they killed Beta in the 80's: they aren't allowing people to produce porn in that format. Since porn pretty much drives the industry, whichever format has it will dominate.

But is that really still the case, with the internet being such a strong presence now?

I'm no porn expert, I just read an article that predicted it. If you want high-def, I don't think the internet can currently cut it. If it could, then the same arguement would hold true for regular movies.
Also, outside of North America, I don't think high speed access is as wide spread. I know some countries still have pay by the minute access.

The USA is lagging dearly in high speed broadband penetation (oh, almost a pun!) compared to countries like Korea or Sweden or even Canada. As a matter of fact it was in 20th place, world wide. (that's in 2006). www.websiteoptimization.com/bw/0607/

Not to be argumentative or anything, but I get HD content off the internet all the time. Not porn....but TV shows. You can get HDTV quality in an MPEG2 or MPEG4 compressed file. Having seen HDTV in all its beautiful clarity & glory, I am pretty sure I don't want to see some of that porn out there in HD.

Good points. But do you watch the HD stuff on your hd tv or on your computer monitor? /agree re hd porn. /ew re broadband the numbers suggest to me that most of the states is covered, the big cities in China (but not most of China), and many of the 1st world contries. That leaves a lot of the world without. And we have such a big country with lots of people who aren't in concentrated uprban areas compared to a lot of the others on that list, I'm not surprised. They have satellite tv in small farming villages in China, but no video store that could stock hd dvds. If anything, a lot of the world might just leapfrog straight to pay-per-view downloading the same way they went straight from no phone to cell phone (easier to put in towers than wires). But then the makers will need region encoding and other drm stuff so who knows what will happen? Best bet is probably a device that can read both.

I have the HD-DVD add on for the 360. Of course, now it seems like every movie coming out that I want to own is only on Bluray (like Casino Royale).

I hate Sony. They are always trying to come out with this proprietary BS! It just messes up the whole market. I refuse to buy sony products anymore. Here is a fantastic article on Sony. *NSFW* article
