Static electricity sucks. So, I spend my days at work dealing with fairly expensive network equipment, servers, and PC's, and am pretty well versed in protecting the equipment from static electricity. This morning, I'm running a bit late for work and realize I need to grab a file from my PC. I grab my flash drive, sit down in my chair, lean down to plug it in, and get to see the prettiest damn 1/2" long static shock arc I've ever seen. Quicker than I can say 'oh shit', my PC spontaneously reboots. Starts coming back up and giving me a bunch of CMOS errors, then it boots into Windows. Everything seemed ok for about 15 seconds as my apps started up, then my computer started redetecting all my hardware as if it was newly installed. Might be a pooched motherboard...hopefully its just my CMOS settings getting cleared out. Hopefully nothing else was damaged. I had just bought a new nVidia 8800 video card too, but luckily it hasnt been installed yet. Guess I'll have to assess the damage tonight, and hopefully it wont keep me from gaming for very long.

Bummer. We had some power outtages a few weeks ago. I went to turn on the Wii and no dice. I had to unplug it for about 30 minutes, then it worked. Hope your stuff is ok.

heh, yeah I copied the file, then looked at the other data on the flash drive and it looked intact. Which I thought was kinda surprising...

Phew! It scrambled my BIOS settings, but after restoring them, everything seems fine.

Our hotel in Beijing had some electrical issues on our floor. Everytime we walked down the hall (only happened on our hall) we would get a massive static charge built up. I saw an 8th of an inch discharge from my finger to the elevator that felt like a first degree burn.
