ark March 27 on your calendar if you are a MMO fan, as it is the day Nexon America is set to launch Mabinogi – a Fantasy MMORPG – commercially. Already a hit in Asia, with over seven million registered players, the release will expand the fantasy world first brought to our attention through an open beta. The official commercial launch will yield
new items, skills, customization options and the debut of the first chapter in the Mabinogi storyline, Generation One: The Advent of Morrigan. While upgrades and expansions will be available to purchase, Mabinogi will be a free-to-play MMO title.
Nexon differentiates Mabinogi from other online MMO’s by positioning the title as a “fantasy life.” Players aren’t forced to simply battle or go on quests. The player can go to school, get a job, learn instruments, fish and hunt, cook and even throw parties for friends. All of these aspects complement the battle system and adventure portions of the game.
“There is nothing out there quite like Mabinogi and the commercial launch is just the advent of what’s to come,” Nexon America President and CEO John H. Chi said. “Mabinogi dispels the negative connotations free-to-play games have had with North American players. From its unique combat system, to its rich gameplay variety and the way players can mature and develop an avatar in the game, there’s no question Mabinogi is the first game of its kind to pay such close attention to detail.”
Nexon assures potential players that the free-to-play experience is engaging enough that the optional monetary purchases are not necessary. However, the biggest motivation to purchase an upgraded package is to participate in the mainstream storyline. Other upgrades include more control over your avatar. Purchases at the Cash Shop allows players to rebirth a character – keeping any skills they acquired previously – and even be reborn at a younger level. Players will also be able to create a new character or change a character’s appearance.
