Day Two of the Letter From the Producer Live session at the Tokyo Game Show went into detail about some of the upcoming content of 2.1 teased during the first day of the event. Yoshida took to the stage, providing commentary, screenshots, concept art, and some video footage of some of the upcoming content as well.
One of the first things discussed was the release date for the new Lightning Returns crossover content for FFXIV. It’s scheduled to appear some time after the release of Lightning Returns on November the 14th. There was also some footage shown of various battle scenes and the appearance of FFXIII’s versions of Odin and Bahamut in the world of FFXIV. Yoshida revealed that Lightning would have a reason as to why she came to Eorzea, and the appearances of Odin and Bahamut seem like a good enough hint.
Talk of upcoming patch content came next, with Yoshida revealing the order in which we’d see some of the new content. We can expect the Crystal Tower in 2.1, an update to the Binding Coil of Bahamut in 2.2, and another update to the Crystal Tower in 2.3.
The Binding Coil of Bahamut
Speaking of Bahamut, the current playable content known as the Binding Coil of Bahamut was given some screen time as well. The story behind this 8-player dungeon will revolve around Bahamut’s destruction of 1.0 Eorzea, and will also relate to Lousioux, the former leader of the Scions who sacrificed his life in the previous game. It is currently the hardest content in the game, with no one having completed the 5th stage yet. Yoshida assured players that they would continue adding on to the dungeon in the future, then showed off some footage of all five stages, or coils.
Yoshida also mentioned that those who are unable to clear it now will eventually be able to clear it in the future, due to a system already in place that gives players buffs if they die too many times during main story and class quest battles. This system will also be used added to the Binding Coil through updates, and Yoshida’s goal seems to be to ensure that all players will be able to clear this content eventually, even if it takes them longer to do so.
Crystal Tower
The Crystal Tower was covered also, with Yoshida displaying a couple of images of artwork and quite a few screenshots of some of the rooms of the Crystal Tower. One of the pieces of artwork depicted a number of bosses from Final Fantasy III mashed together into one group, which seemed to imply we would definitely be seeing these enemies in the Crystal Tower. A number of details were also shared about the dungeon, including the fact that it will be made for an alliance of 3 full parties, for a total of 24 players at once. It was also mentioned that the content would be more casual than the Binding Coil, enough that it will be available in the Duty Finder. A lot of the interviews and information that have come out over the past few weeks also seem to imply that the Crystal Tower is meant to help players gear up for the Binding Coil.
Housing
Some details about housing were given, along with a lot of nice footage about what the houses will look like and the various pieces of furniture we’ll be able to use. As far as details go, housing will first be available for Free Companies, and later for individuals. It will be available in all 3 nations, and will come in three sizes: small, medium, and large. There will be around 380 parts available for customization, and there will also be content where you’ll be able to obtain certain parts through battle as well.
Other plans for the space include chocobo raising and the ability to grow gyashl greens. Plans are also in the development stage for a basement workspace where players will be able to craft and work together to build things like ships.
NPC shops and retainer stands for Free Companies are also in the planning stages, and crafting classes won’t be left out of the housing content. Battle classes can bring in certain drops that can be crafted into items usable for housing as well. Despite the details, Yoshida declined to reveal how much housing would cost for the moment.
Wolves Den
Wolves Den refers to the area for FFXIV’s upcoming PvP content. The content will be designed for 4v4 player matches, and you’ll be able to group up at levels 30/40/50. There will also be specific skills exclusive to PVP only.
The content will be available through Duty Finder, premade groups and Duty Finder groups won’t be able to challenge each other. 1v1 matches won’t be available at the start but they’re currently working on implementing that feature. Additionally, some PvP specific gear was shown, gear that you’ll only be able to earn through PvP battles.
Future Plans
Yoshida concluded the session by announcing plans for the next Live Letter in mid October. He also revealed that they would be producing special content that showed off more of the 2.1 content, including Housing and the Crystal Tower specifically. They will also be going over their plans for the PS4. And they’ll be answering questions like they normally do.
As always, thanks to Reinheart for his translations. You can check out the transcript in full here. In addition to that, we’ve got a collection of screenshots below for you to browse through.
