Caught a blurb in a journal recently that I found interesting. The American Medical Association is evidently considering making "video game addiction" a valid diagnosis including an ICD-9 code (its a universal code for diagnosis/billing). The article I saw made it akin to addiction to illicit drugs, alcohol, etc. You can read their thoughts here: AMA researching video game addiction. It is an interesting thought, I suppose, as I have known some people who definitely seem to have no life outside of some of the online games. I have no idea what the proposed treatment would be. Funny thing is that this particular blurb relates it to a problem with kids and advised parents to monitor their children. They are obviously unaware that the average online player is 30 years old, I believe. Sigh, the AMA doesn't have any idea what a big can of worms they are playing with here and I am sure could make better use of their time. Wonder if a person will be able to get disability based on video game addiction....

Shit - I know where I'm going the day after this cuts live!
"Doc... I'm in withdrawl, its been 72 hours since I fragged a complete n00b, and 24 hours since I last spawn camped. I need a script for some FF or WAR or Doom3, and a week off work.... Oh yea - think you can write me a script for a month worth of War Subscription and ISP access too?"

In a recent conference they decided to not include it in the next version of the DSM or ICD. So it appears that it will not be an official diagnosis...for now......
