OK, you might say that at 35 years old, I shouldn't play Pokemon, but I always was a big fan of that series. I bought Yellow, Silver/Gold (for the Gameboy), Emerald/Ruby (for the GBA) and now Diamond for my DS. Maybe my girlfriend will pick up the Pearl version so we can catch em all!
The nice thing tho about that version is now I can get owned by 12 years old kids all around the world on Nintendo Wifi.
Hehe. Any other playing those games? Don't be shy! Admit it! hehe

I never have, but have known people who have. The reviews for most of the games are really good, I just could never bring myself to try them.
What is the gameplay like? Is it a pretty standard RPG?

to the core, it's a standard turn-based RPG. You could say that it shares a lot of Final Fantasy or the like game mechanics. What sets it apart is the collection factor (ie "gotta catch'em all!"). In the last few iterations, they added a lot of features (breeding, contests, etc...).
The combat mechanics is a lot based on rock-paper-scissor. Ie. Electricity is weak versus rock, but strong versus water based pokemons. And there's a lot of elements in the game, so the game play is balanced.
Otherwise, even the old Pokemon Red/Blue on the Gameboy was a very deep game for the system.
The game play really grew well and is still fun even in a Xbox360/PS3/Wii generation. I like it.

I played the Red/Blue back in the day. Those were fun times. Definitely the most fun I've ever had on a hand held. My best friend had blue, I had red. Who knows how many sets of AAA's we burned through. I used to be able to identify all 151 pokemon.
Looking back.. the gameplay was just OK on the old red/blue. How would you rate the newer ones? I might get one. I tried Silver once and got bored and quit.

Well, technically, it's still the same game. Only, it has more pokemons, more moves, and a lot of features added to make it worthwhile. Breeding, moods, contests, etc... It's still an amazing deep game. Plus, now, there's the Wifi bonus. Dunno, if you have a DS, it's a given, most probably the best DS game out there right now.

4 1/2 stars out of 5. "If you weren't one of the half-million Pokémon fans who pre-ordered Diamond or Pearl, then you should feel confident in picking one of these up immediately. The enhanced visuals and online functionality alone make them more enjoyable than any of the previous games, and you don't want to be the last trainer on the block to get with the times. These are the best games in the series by a considerable margin, and should provide you with entertainment for weeks to come, especially if you're planning on playing Pokémon Battle Revolution for the Nintendo Wii. If you've never played a Pokémon game before, then Diamond or Pearl make for an excellent place to begin your love affair with this series." Excellent review
