I was about to give up on my ranger until I started switching between a greatsword and an axe and horn. The bow was just not cutting it. Also you can switch between pets by hitting f4 when they die. This allows me to almost always have a pet up.
Now I'm loving my Ranger.

I wasn't a huge fan of the longbow either, but i love the short bow. and the axe and horn is great for doing damage to multiple targets from range, and for giving out a solid group buff when you are playing support.
Another fun choice is Sword and Dagger, with both those weapons on your 2, 3, and 4 hotkeys are all extra evades, it's very tanky.
Another fun thing to try if you are having trouble with survivability is the Moa and Jellyfish pets, they with both auto cast healing on you.

I've found the longbow to be amazing in WvW, but that's about it.
I really switch up what I use, but am a huge fan of Warhorn/sword and greatsword.

That is one of my favorite things in this game. I wasn't enjoying the dual daggers on my thief, too much sneaky, sneaky, stabby, stabby. But I did not want to re-roll and really wanted to stick with this class as it looked like a lot of fun to play. I switched to the sword and gun as my primary method with shortbow as my alternate. This made the class so much more fun to me, granted it's probably more my play style but that's what is nice about it. Your play style does not dictate your class.

I wasn't enjoying the dual daggers on my thief... I switched to the sword and gun as my primary method with shortbow as my alternate. This made the class so much more fun to me... I am running the exact same combo on my Thief. I look like a Witch Hunter from WAR :-) All the cool Thieves out there are still running dual daggers because in 1v1 situations, Backstab is more reliable than Pistol Whip (which is easier to dodge/evade out of). However since I mostly do WvW where 1v1s are rare, sword+gun suits me just fine. EDIT: Oh wait this was a Ranger thread... woops. Well, the only reason I am a Thief and not a Ranger is I am terrible at pet management, and playing pet-less as a Ranger in GW2 is not an option like it was in GW1.

With my thief leveling up in pve, I like pistol/dagger, though I haven't tried pistol/pistol. I haven't tried pvp with him yet.
