1.0.4 dropped today, and the patch notes can be found here.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that most of you that were playing at launch are like me, hit the ugly brick wall that was Blizzard's cheap-ass "and then we doubled it" version of Inferno, and then saw your playtime drop off a cliff. I barely touched D3 after mid-June, but rumors of 1.0.4 got me interested again. I was working a Barb up to 60 (at 57 now), but when 1.0.4 dropped today, I tried my DH again. My tentative conclusion? D3 may be worth playing again. A few quick observations:
From a gaming perspective...
-Loot feels like it drops more often now, and is more in line with expectations. Still nothing like D2, but Blizz did some decent tweaking for 1.0.4.
-Rare/Champ packs on Inferno seem more reasonable. Still very difficult, but not brick-wall. This is closer to what I expected Inferno to be at launch. Act 2 is now really hard, but not near-impossible.
-The boosts to less-used skills are intriguing. I've actually tinkered with some new builds.
-Grouping in Inferno may actually be viable now.
-I cannot speak to class balancing, but the changes to the classes were significant and, for the most part, not nerfs.
From an AH perspective:
-AH prices are rock-bottom, thanks to the ghost town that was D3 in July and August. This means you've got a VERY good chance of getting high-end gear for very little gold (I was able to get a 40k DPS build on my DH for about 200k)
-USD-to-gold conversion rate right now is about $1.25=1M, so fairly cheap to get a large sum of gold if you want to gear up quickly. Obviously, some won't want to take this route, but others might.
I'm very cautious about recommending D3, but 1.0.4 seems to me to put the game where it should have been with 1.0.0. I know GW2 is on the horizon, so it may not matter for most of you, but I think D3 is now that game you can fire up if you just want to play a few minutes.
Tentative /cheer.
