Ok, so I've gotten to play twice now with Barrick's buddy acct, and have about 6 hrs /played.
The character is a level 8 Wood Elf Ranger named Tulran. I guess I am over in the elfy lands. I can't remember the name...like Autumnwood Outpost or Shimmersomething Garrison.
I like the ranger so far...he seems to do some decent damage I guess. Hard to say because I haven't compared to another class yet.
I have only solo'ed so far, and it hasn't been particularly hard, as long as I avoid things that are more than 2 levels over my level. I can also handle 2 mobs if they are the same level as me, or 3 if they are 1-2 levels below. I haven't figured out the whole 'dots' thing, I have only been looking at their numerical level (I don't have an instruction doc, so the whole UI is pretty much a mystery).
Overall, I am interested to see how it goes over the rest of my trial, but I do have some probs with this game.
Some pros & cons:
I like that they copied the combat stance thing right from WOW warriors....good choice, because it works well. Same with the quest tracking.
Holy crap is the default interface clunky I'm gonna have to try this one: vgsohinterface.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=49 and see if it works better, targets faster, etc. I noticed that I would get exp before the monster was even dead.
This game is out of beta, right? On 4 seperate occasions, the mobs I was fighting fell into the earth, and were still able to hit me....but I couldnt hit them. I got stuck in doors twice while they were opening/closing.
Graphics are ok. They remind me a lot of DAOC...particularly the mobs and noises they make when hit. To be fair, I am playing at the middle or second to lowest graphics setting. The upper 2 settings were a bit more chop then I like to play at. I'm buying a new vid card in the next week or two, so will hopefully have a chance to try again.
Falling out of this wood elf city isn't nearly as lethal as falling from Kelethin in EQ1
I haven't tried Diplomacy at all yet, but did the starting Tradeskill 'run around town and talk to these people' quest, and realized I have NO interest in trades. Way too freakin convoluted. Jesus just give me a hammer, forge, and some metal. WOW has it right. DAOC had it right. The problems in those games were usefulness of the crafted items, and their effect on the economy, NOT the mechanics of making them.
I can't get the UI to save settings like Torch on or my camera view. I must be missing a checkbox someplace. How come even if I choose which character I want to play on the game Updater screen, I still have to choose on the character selection screen?
