I'd love to hear your reasoning as to why it's a bad thing.
It's been our experience that a large majority of people who roll on RP servers actually care about the community in the game. They tend to be more mature and are willing to help people out. Most, and a big emphasis on most, don't actively roleplay unless it's at a location in a city that becomes the unofficial spot to swap stories via RP.
We don't, or have ever, require our members to participate in roleplay while on an RP server. We do want everyone to be mindful of it, and realize that our guild chat is a normal, OOC style chat. If someone wants to RP in /say or during an event where it's encouraged, great, more power to them.
The big question going into Rift is whether or not RP will even be prevalent on the Roleplay servers. No one has a history with the lore in the game, so it's doubtful to me if it will even happen.

Yay for hanging on to Stereotypes created in Goldshire 5 years ago as a basis for why all RP servers must suck.
Correction: I am now playing Rift and agree with Slurms. RP Communities have always been the least full of trolls and ePeeners.
I get enough of that in EVE with the Goonies. ;D

And without specific mechanisms for open world PvP (like WAR had), open world PvP is just a gank-fest, or in other words; frustrating and a waste of time. I went this road when I played WoW, and I never (ever) had any meaningful open world PvP in that game.
I fully support this decision.

Well I have no problem with the role playing aspect. It's the pve, I will say though that I don't know the rule set but figured as DAoC and WAR fans you guys would pick a pvp server.

Important thing to remember, is that even on a PvE ruleset, if you try to attack someone of the other realm, you are auto-flagged. If they defend themselves in response/reflex they are auto-flagged as well. Before you know it a big fight ensues out of spite for the other side trying to kill your friends. This has happened on more than one occassion during beta.
In fact, there was one point in which we were in a raid doing a Rift event, and Guardian groups had come over to investigate the action. Turns out some of them were flagged for some reason (maybe hitting a soulstone of ours or killing some poor punk). Well, me having that DAoC streak in me I went all in for them on my Warlock/Chloro/Archon (laying down all my DoT's on the flagged bastards. Before I knew it my whole group came to my rescue and we wiped them shortly after. It was quite a fun moment in the middle of all the hectic Rift NPC's and such.
Ultimately it will still have a PvP element since anything you do to hinder the other side directly flags you anyway. It will be hard to avoid especially in the shared zones where we will see the enemy side regularly.

Even in WAR, we played on RP PvE servers, until they were closed down. For the reasons Steve mentioned above. While I love PvP, I have no desire to play where my level 10 is jumped by a level 40 who thinks it's cool and shows how big his e-penis is by one or two shotting a lowbie. If a person wants to run around flagged all the time, then it's their choice on this type of server.
On a side note, one of the Rift devs said that if there were enough interest in a RvR style zone, they may add that in. But it would be controlled PvP, like WAR was on PvE servers.
As for the Multiplaying game of the year, lol, what was it? It should go to show you the state of MMOs this last year. Also, as you can tell by podcasts, Mutliplaying is about gaming in general, not just MMOs. MMOs is just the way that we can all actually meet up in the virtual world when we can find one worth playing for an extended period of time. One that isn't a grindfest from hell that will make your eyes bleed. Fucking Aion.

Makes you wonder why more games don't have alternative rule servers.. I would play on a RVR type server if they added territory control.

If they do add significant RVR content I would jump in. That would be the Cat's Pajamas!

So do you get flagged in the contested zones on the PvE servers? I mainly just want to be able to Rift Gank when the other faction is doing Rift Raids

You *can* get flagged in the contested zones, but the last time I was in one it was not automatic. It's hard not to though, since any NPC, any soulstone, any faction owned nick-nack that you attack will flag you as PvP enabled. Essentially any disabling of the enemy faction will do so. They may tweak it since it is after all a contested zone, though with all the things that turn you eligible it might be a moot point anyway.
