I checked out the Elementalist (who I named Elementalisp), the Engineer, the Necro, and played more of the Guardian and Ranger last night.
I'm down to going with either a Ranger or Guardian on launch, but I'm totally torn.
The Guardian is a ton more fun to play than I expected, and the idea of having spirit weapions fighting alongside you just sounds amazing (I didn't get that far). But I ALWAYS regret not playing a Ranger, and the Ranger in GW2 IS very fun...
What is everyone else going with on day 1?

Is it still like GW where you pick a primary/secondary combo? I was actually considering Guardian/Ranger. I always play tank-types. I'm also going to make a wee little mage-type (whatever that little race is called). I'm going to be a sneaky boom-boom.

yeah, only 1 profession, and there are no tanky types.
that said, i also like the ranger and the guardian. Some info that might help you decide.
Ranger pets have no survivability in wvw, if you are choosing the class for awesome pet power, think again. Also, as this game doesn't have traditional agro/threat management, don't expect the pet to tank for you.
apparently for balance reasons, classes with lots of healing, get way less HP. this included the guardian, scaled to 80 in the mists my guardian had less than half as much HP as my ranger, and that's with the balanced pvp gear, so it's not a fluke. (this rule also applies to elementalists) So while guardians can get a lot of armor, they still only about balance out on survivability.
Guardian's still only have one weapon with enough range to use it from a castle wall on people below at the gates, and it's slow and one handed, so not many ability choices, and not huge damage, and easy for the other players to dodge. There was some discussion about maybe making the staff have longer range (right now it's only 600 which is pretty short) but nothing definite yet.
All that being said, if you are looking for something in between guardian and ranger, you might want to take a closer look at the warrior. They can use Long Bows and rifles, so they have decent ranged attacks, and they can spec their traits such that their shouts and banners have some healing attached to them, but because that's only a specific trait set up, they don't count as being a high healing class, so they don't take the hp penalty. And they still get heavy armor and shields. No pets though.
Oh, and the guardian spirit weapons are lame, in my opinion. very short duration and very long cool downs, so you really only get to pop them in emergencies. Don't get me wrong, they are good when you pop them, but if I'm going to play a pet class, I want to be able to keep the pet up more consistently, and since the elementalist, ranger, necro, engineer, and mesmer all get pets that they can more or less keep out all the time, i don't really see why the guardian doesn't, given all their other penalties.

hmmm, given all that, I'll probably stick with my first thought and go Ranger.
I may check out the Warrior in the next beta weekend though.

I'm pretty well decided by now that the Elementalist will be my main. I LOVE playing Dagger/Dagger or Staff. So far, the other classes that have made good impressions with me are the Ranger and the Necro. Still haven;t tried all the classes yet though.

That's odd...in a video I watched, I was certain I saw someone playing a necro that switched over to some sort of elemental type build. Maybe there are no secondary professions, but can you not switch between them? I'm going to go do some googling...no more being lazy. Well this pretty much answered it: wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Frequently_Asked_QuestionsAlthough the Guardian looks pretty tanky to me. I'm not sure that word means what you think it means.

Still in beta. Currently closed beta except for weekend events for preorder-ers. They had a stress test this past Monday, and no announcement yet of the next event.
Or of a date. From the sounds of the twitter account, they haven't even finalized a date, except that it's launching this year "for sure."
Hopefully within the next couple months. I want it. Bad. Like, imagine how excited you were for D3. But probably more. Like 3 times more. Or not. I have no way to gauge that.
