LOL Yeah, overall, a really horrible idea. It's okay for those who want/don't care that others know who they are. But yeah, potentially exposing all those people who play the biggest game in the world is foil hat crazy.

You all make some good points. I do believe that it may deter some douche baggery on forums, but asshat are asshats and they will always be asshats. It is just in their nature. Maybe I should change my steam name. I just never thought about it so I just used my yahoo id which happens to be my name.

Another thing I hadn't thought of before: www.tankspot.com/showthread.php?68744-RealID-Unethical-and-DangerousMinors -- Any parent will need to be far more concerned about their children's activities on Blizzard sites than they currently are. This is especially true in any case where a child's real name can be found or their address can be tracked. and alot of minors play WoW and I bet alot of parents will have no idea that their child's real name will appear on forums and let's face it, many children are dumb to the consequences of internetting.

oh snap,....that is a good point. No way I'd let my kids get on the forums. I'd have a tough time even letting them play knowing that they could sneak on the boards.

I thought it was a joke or someone was reporting this all wrong to me. Real names? Really? Spending about 10 minutes thinking about it would result in a list of reasons why this is asinine. Don't we still use pros and cons lists, Blizzard? I'd love to see what you came up with...
Anyhoo...yea, you all have covered much of the fucked-up-titude of this decision. It just seems Blizzard is slowly evolving into this egomaniacle company with their recent decisions involving StarCraft 2 (Unless they have changed their position in regards to tournaments, etc.) and now this RealID thing. I need to look into it more but it just seems that they are also trying to create twitter/facebook for geeks with this RealID...I could be wrong.

Hola Wrasse! and another good point that alot of people are forgetting: "It is not okay to dismiss people’s real concerns over their comfort or personal safety, just because you do not share them." full article : www.righteousorbs.com/?p=2098

Heya!
Yea, to each their own. Let everyone decide (as individuals) exactly how much information they wish to share. That's like the first thing you hear when you begin browsing forums, etc...don't share your personal information.
Plus, you cannot begin to fathom the stupidity and crazy that exists out there on the intrawebs. Take what you deem crazy and then take it up a notch or two and you *may* be close.

Actually now that I think about it, I hope Blizzard goes through with this. Then when someone is e-stalked/injured/defrauded (is that a word???) then sues the pants off of Blizzard.

HA! Class action lawsuit against Blizzard/Activision for this junk would be so poetic. Best part: victims can call out people by real name. No avoiding it now Blizzard! Can't hide behind call-signs anymore!
