www.massively.com/2010/08/27/the-road-to-mordor-frugal-free-to-play/HO LEE SHIT?!? it's already here?? I will definately be checking this implementation out as I do love the game. Between this, Guild Wars and the time cards I have on my shelf, I may not need to pay for an MMO for a while. although I am still thinking of checking WAR out again........goddamnit

Uh oh! I finally got my brother, sister-in-law, and dad to play one game together (freeshard classic daoc). If my dad hears about this, he's going to defect and play it.

Just play a T1 trial account to get your WAR fix. It works quite well for me.
And soon I'll be able to get my LotRO fix... not that I really need it. But hey, its free! (And better than EQ2X!)

Right now my favorite thing is that my Turbine Points will keep stacking up month after month since I have a lifetime sub. This means when I come back to play, I'll have a crap ton of points to spend in the store! I think that's awesome. Maybe I can finally get my hunter to 65 or something with a bunch of XP pots!

The F2P head start I believe begins today, I believe. If you were in the beta, you can take part....I don't recall which other groups are allowed.
I'll probably start this evening.

I wasn't in the beta test, but I was able to play today. Maybe they are letting everyone in early or something.
Oh, initial impression: damn this game has aged better than EQ2. The graphics are just so much better looking overall.

Yeah, I love the environments in the game, but the character models are pretty janky looking. They tend to look better later in the game once you get them all covered in armor though. I'm actually starting to wonder if maybe LotRO would make a better weekly game seeing all the troubles we've been having getting Guild Wars working. Maybe I'll post a poll and see what everyone thinks. ;D

Oh, initial impression: damn this game has aged better than EQ2. The graphics are just so much better looking overall. Really? I only played EQ2 for a month or so several years ago and have not looked at it again. I played LotRO for close to a year and really liked it. When I went back earlier this year during a free to play weekend, I simply couldn't stand the graphics and feel of the gameplay. I installed and uninstalled on the same day.

Was it EQ2 that you uninstalled in a day or did you mean LotRO? I meant that LotRO looks way better than EQ2 does. LotRO has nice looking textures and smooth character animations (in my very limited experience so far), compared to EQ2 where stuff just looks flat, monotonous and bland. I really noticed it in the EQ2 Halas starting area, the NPCs/questgivers are ok but the world itself is just really really plain. Everything is really blocky and colorless.

I'd be totally down for this if the group remains relatively static (all within 3-4 levels or so). There's no mentoring system like EQ2/STO and getting run through content with a high level character (or characters) is unfun.

I installed/uninstalled LotRO on the same day. But like I said, I've not tried EQ2 since shortly after release. I was just wondering if it looked that much worse than LotRO if I'd be disenchanted with it as well. Of course, I may have just been having one of those major MMO apathy days also.

They look really, really different. I think EQ2 has a TON of charm, especially in the older zones. LOTRO looks gorgeous and coherent. They have such different art styles that it's hard to compare, but if I were to pick one (and be a graphics whore), LOTRO looks better.
