I rerolled my guy and found the costume options I wanted: I'll put more pics up later of the spell effects, but I was very happy last night that I found how to change the colors of the effects. Whatcha think is running through those tubes?!?!? Edit: I also found out when I did this, that I never had to reroll...you can respec all of your abilities or go to a tailor and make cosmetic changes...whenever.

Right there the art style looks cool. Too bad it turns all 'janky' in motion.

I think clunky is a more appropriate word. It is growing on me though. When I got my flying ability, and changed all my spell effects to be how I wanted, I enjoyed it a touch more. One thing that keeps bugging me is how lowly populated all the instances are. It uses a channel-like system, but you have to choose which one to join when you zone. Kicker is that it caps at like 30ish people in each channel....that's pretty low. Beta though, so we'll see. (even though it hits in like less than 2 weeks) It could be something I revisit later if Aion gets stale and TOR isn't out yet. But if Aion has good end-game/pvp, I'm sold.

Maybe they will slowly raise the cap on those as server stability improves.
The end game PvP is what really turns me off about CO. Isn't it basically just arenas?

Yeah...and cornball "octagon" style arenas...every video I've seen looks cheesy as hell. And if you watch those videos, watch how the people move around. It's kindof choppy, not very fuild...janky

Yeah, the promo vid they released for Arenas really turned me off. It all seemed very static and stiff without any fluidity or strategy.
When I first played the closed beta, I had a so-so time. The graphics are great and I love the customization, but as I think I said elsewhere, there's nothing compelling about the gameplay. It's not that they haven't made improvements over CoH, I think they have. The overall feeling of being a hero in this game has improved greatly. I think that's in part due to getting travel powers much earlier on in the game, but the overall environment seems more successful at imparting a comic book feel than CoH ever managed to do. I think the overall cell shading and design are a big part of that success. But in the end I just don't feel like I'm immersed as a character in this world.
Here's where I think the game falls apart for me. In a comic book, the protagonist is usually interesting because he is different from everyone else. Where he comes from, how he grew up, his experiences, his physical appearance and of course his abilities. set him apart from the rest of humanity. It's often these differences that are the catalyst for his heroism. In Champions Online, and City of Heroes before that, you are supposed to be a hero, but you are surrounded by dozens of other people, just like that. Everyone has super powers, everyone runs around in a costume... hell, we practically outnumber the civilian NPCs wandering around, and that is where the premise falls apart for me. Throw in the fact that you see a million guys wandering around, clad in black, calling themselves Shadowdeath, or Silentkiller... and it just erodes the whole premise that much further.
In Warhammer or WoW, or many of the other MMOs out there, we understand that the world we're entering is a realm of fantasy, where there are many beings just like yourself who are waging a war against the enemy. The genre lends itself to seeing a vast army of beings just like yourself, united against a common enemy.
I'm not one to Role Play, but I do like some immersion in my games, and in my experience so far, the very nature of comic books just doesn't lend itself well to immersion in an MMO form.

agreed Grok, that's why games like inFamous work so well....cause it's just you against everyone else.

Wow, i just watched the IGN review of inFamous on YouTube, and damn that looks good. Any yes, it seems like they nail the heroic feeling you should get from a game.
With great power comes great responsibility... but if everyone has that power... is it great anymore?

I'm not a fan of the comic art style. It doesn't quite work because you have these super detailed textures, surrounded by jaggy blocky black lines. It looks great in screenshots, but not live.
