I'm sort of curious as to what fluxay thinks of the info that's been released. The fact that there's no space battles and the reduced player count especially. I've never really played much of the Battlefront games for one reason or another, so I don't know that I have much of an opinion on all this, but I wanted to get a level-headed opinion on the news since the louder section of the internet right now is mostly doom-inciting.

I HAVE BEEN SUMMONED!Alright, we actually devoted most of last nights episode of Fluxtaposed to Star Wars, so it's all fresh on my mind, well except for WolfCop....Still can't belive I watched that.... anyway. Back on topic, my thoughts on Battlefront! I was able to watch the trailer and panel live. After the trailer, I was kind of like ________ eh. Does the game, the graphics, fidelity, loook gorgeous? Absolutely. BUT, it's a cinematic trailer, which I can only get so excited about. You can put lipstick on a pig, but you still just have a pig I want to see the game in action. Will I still be buying it on pc? Almost absolutely. So let's break down some of the details, but first let me give a little bit of my background in the series. I purchase Battlefront on day one. It was essentially Battlefield in a Star Wars skin. I'm pretty sure I spent almost all of my game time as a Stormtrooper. That's all I want in these games, to be that basic grunt taking down Rebel Scum. The prequel era stuff was an added bonus and at the time, the game really did have a great look to it. Battlefront 2 came out what, like a year later? And for that reason, I did not purchase it. It felt like it was too-soon to me, and a cash grab, so I didn't pick it up until like a year ago when it was available on Steam very cheap. This was the same reason I avoided Left 4 Dead 2, seemed like a 1.2 upgrade and not a true sequel at the time. Alright, now back to this Battlefront. I'm going to try to list all of the points I recall the internet shitting on. Reddit is a great source for such opinions... - The AT-AT is on rails
- Ok, based on what we know right now, YES, the walker is on rails for the specific mode, walker assault. Would you want to try and pilot one of those damn things on Endor? You'd be fucking stuck between trees constantly. Besides, being able to pilot one in the previous games was pretty much press 'W' and shoot. It took like 2 minutes to turn the moster! It sounds like a fun-ass game mode to me still attacking/definding this beautiful piece of machinery. More details to come I'm sure.
- No classes
- No classes... That irks me a little bit. Everyone is able to outfit their soldier as they see fit. Will their be limits on loadouts per team? Will the gameplay be essential to a class role, like Dirty Bomb? Or is it more DM, King of the Hill, CTF stuff, where class doesn't really matter except for spawning weapons and cosmetics? Again, with more details, I feel this will all make sense.
- No space combat
- I only played space combat in Battelfront II very recently annnnd I hate it. If I was lucky enough to make it out of the hanger, I would just explode. Most of the time I would die from a group that had borded my ship. I do remember spending some time in an anti-aircraft turret, that was fun, but overall the experience was "meh". Much like Battlefield, I'm drawn to the infantry combat side of things. The idea of boarding an enemy ship and taking it down from the inside does sound like a blast, but the hear of air/space combat is the dogfighting and we will still get that in an in-atmosphere experience. So I can still fly a Tie Fighter or X-Wing? Yes. Great! I'm sure there ship spawns will be camped just like in any game of this type, I will most likely blow myself up within 10 seconds anway!
- No single-player campaign
- If this was a real deal breaker for you, then I'm sorry, you should have been expecting this as soon as it was announced DICE would be taking control of this property. This will not be the series for you. I have never played any single-player portion of any Battlefront or Battlefield game. Isn't the multiplayer the point? With this community being largely PC based, I feel that opinion is more widely accepted. In seems once you crossover into the console side of things, players are a little more upset with its absense. They want to feel like this real powerful player on the battlefield as they mow down the enemy field of bots. Well, this is a MULTIPLAYER SHOOTER after all, hence MULTIPLAYER being the focus. I can get competitive in my games and love playing against other "real people". While I would love to have a story-driven Star Wars narrative to explore, this game will give me what I want even more, experience some awesome sci-fi battles first hand! Hoth! Endor! Jakku! Fuck yes!
There also will be an offline, co-op, single-player portion for the game called Missions, which are replayable etc etc. I will check those out co-op.
- No galacitc conquest
- Never played this mode, so I can't say a lot about it. Basically gave you a reasont to string a much of offline/SP battles together? Or was it playable with a friend? Either way, my points about single player campaign should cover this.
- Reduced player count
- Alright, not having 64 on 64 battles is a bummer! However, servers always get modded and enable that shit for the WORST possible maps. It just becomes spamfest of explosions and bullshittery that for me, personally, is not fun. OR you are onthis HUGE map, and spend most of your time running around just trying to FIND the battle, only to get popped by a sniper. F that.
As long as the player count feels "right" for the specific map, I'm happy. What did they say the target it, 20/20? And sometimes even smaller yet? Again, as long as the maps is fitting for the player count, I'll be thrilled.
I've also heard issues with the number of maps available, something like 8 total, 2 per planet? Shit, that's about standard nowadays for a release, and yes, sadly, expect more with DLC.... I'll touch on that topic in a bit.
- No prequel content
- The prequels... Love em or hate em, it's a part of the Star Wars canon. My opinion has swung back and forth on the matter, but after all of the other supporting media I have consumed, I accept the prequels. Could they have been better movies? Yes. Do they still fill in important details about the Original Trilogy? In my mind, yes they do.
Many gamers are younger than myself. At 31, yes I'm not that old, but I'm no longer the loudest demographic. Those people grew up with Clone Troopers and Battledroids, those could very well be the first Star Wars films they experience and they want to continue to play out those conflicts. While I detest playing as the Separatists, the Clone Troopers were quite fun. I'm said to see it excluded, but I think ultimately, Disney/LucasArts was looking to continue to tie the films together. Look at what the heavy hitters are now and on the horizon and what the tie to.
Star Wars Comics - set between Ep IV and V (can't comment on Leia, Kanan does not apply) Star Wars Rebels - set between Ep III and IV Various Novels - set between films (Tarkin - III and IV, Aftermath - VI and VII)
So with that said, celebrate what is most recent in the Star Wars timeline (original trilogy), and find a way to hype up and tie it into the new film. Done. Battle of Jakku. You see results of this huge battle that takes place between the Rebels and Imperial holdouts, and we now it takes place shortly after Endor. Guess what, in Battlefront, we get to experience this battle first hand. It's sad to not please every fan, but I'd rather have a superior product due to keeping this tightly focused than rather include everything. Maybe we can see an expansion to add this setting down the road. Something like what happened with Battlefied Vietnam.
- No instant action
- This is being replaced with the Missions game mode. I'm meh on the bot play anyway.
- DLC?
- Alright, this is probably going to be the biggest negative of the game. DLC. It's an EA product, you KNOW there is going to be DLC. At least we are geting Jakku for free. So far the only preorder bonus announced is early access to the Jakku battle, more has to be coming. DICE has stated that the game does have unlocks so I'm guessing some sort of progressions system. I expect DLC to be tied to that. Please learn something from your past mistakes EA, PLEASE.
That's all I can think of at this time, if there are more questions you have, that you would actually like my opinion on, just ask!
Overall, I have a very positive outlook on the game. It seems to have pissed off a large group of the Battlefront faithful, but what they are stating this game will deliver, is EXACTLY what I want from a Battlefront games. Being able to take part in an epic Star Wars sandbox battle. I hate the idea of preorders, but at this time, I feel like I will be picking this game up Day One, unless I see something horrible after we actually see gameplay. I
'm looking forward to E3 and really hope we see more then. I would love to take part in an organized war with 2 armies battling out over multiple battles. I attempted to do this with Battlefield but I never had the time to jump into action with the community. They were well organized and the ability to rise thru the ranks was awesome. I may seek this type of thing out with Battlefront. The partner system sounds fun too. I'm often playing this game with only 1 other friend at a time. The ability for us to always spawn together as well as share unlocks sounds great. Sign me up!
Alright, that's enough from me, interested to hear the thoughts of others.
