But the reason why they are forcing everyone to have a login is because want to remove the possibility for there to be illegal copies of the game. Not to say there won't be some workaround eventually. Correcting myself. Just read something about the AI being handled server-side. Not sure if it's 100% accurate, but if true... I can't even fathom how someone could hack that.
Also, I don't doubt they won't have similar problems like this on day 1, but this is exactly why they're having this beta test.
As far as the game, I played a bit last night. Looks okay, I clicked on some shit and it died and clicked on other shit and it went into my pocket. At this point the game just feels like a very recutive version of an MMO. Not to say playing with friends wouldn't make the experience far more enjoyable, but the story isn't grabbing me in the LEAST. I want to play a bit more tonight though.
Anyone planning on being on?
edit: meant to mention; I've been using the Witchdoctor so far. Class is fun. Love the mix of pets and AoE abilities... but MAN does that dude TOTALLY not fit into that setting. Everything is so midieval feeling and here comes this African tribesman.... wut

From the limited amount of time I have had in the beta I can already tell I am going to be spending a lot of time in this game. I loved the first two games and this one just adds to it. Played it with a few friends too and it reminded me of D2 multiplayer, but better.

So far, game is not looking promising. Technically, they're only letting us in to "stress test." This isn't even the final version of D3 (several blue posts on the forums saying this not the gold master, and that this or that problem has already been fixed in the final code). Perhaps your issues are among those. As for me, aside from the expected server crush trying to log in last night, it went pretty well. There's a nasty bug on exit that forces me to reboot my mac, but they say that's been fixed in the 1.0 release.

Actually, by definition it's not an MMO. Unless they've changed things, the largest numbers of players you'll ever have with you "in world" will be 4-8. This is old-school gaming, and you can invite a few friends to tag along. It's not "Massively multiplayer' at all. It's honest-to-god singleplayer, with a low-grade multiplayer option. Technically, it's not even "online" as everything happens client-side, except for save games and DRM. Did I mention you can pause single-player? This is gaming for adults with kids.

I don't care for this game. I've been beta testing it for over 6 months and it's just click click click hack slash click bhah blah blah. It get boring quick. I've evolved away from this type of gaming. I loved the first 2 but this is like watch the first Friday the 13th after watching Saw. It's just not as cool anymore

Poor choice of words on my part. I don't mean to imply that I thought it was. I mean to say that it feels like an MMO with alot of the depth stripped away, including combat that is simply clicking on targets. I realize I'm being reductive, and I get that it's "old school" but even when it was "new school" I didn't find Diablo to be very interesting.

I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it enough, I'm gonna buy it. It "feels" like Diablo 2, which makes it a surprisingly nostalgic experience. It's nothing I'm gonna rave about, but...yeah. It's alot of fun.

It's enough for me to say it's Diablo 2 with a face lift. Money already was dedicated at that point. The Diablo series has always been a sort of...obsession for me. Very similar to the Dynasty Warriors series. Lots of parallels. Hack and slash goodness!

Maybe that's it. Dynasty Warriors is another one that I can see why people dig it... but it seems so dull to me.

The cross-character features are awesome. I just noticed today that if you upgrade the blacksmith, he's upgraded for all your characters. This is awesomesauce. Given that I was still playing D2 two years ago, this is just topping on the cake. I always said I wanted Diablo II, just with better graphics. Looks like I got it. PS It's also worth noting that we're all commenting on beta. From what I understand, it gets much more challenging at higher levels. Looking at the eventual complexity of choosing skills, runes, armor, etc, I can tell that the relative ease of the first 13 levels is gonna give way to something serious pretty quick; especially once you graduate to Nightmare, or whatever mode it is.

I managed to get in and play for an hour. I loved the 1st one because it was a cool dungeon crawl and it was the first of its kind. It was an awesome re-imagining of my old favorite, Rogue. I didn't like all the clicking, but the newness got me past it. None of the derivative games have done it for me.
This version is about the same for me. Looks great, I bet the story is fun and the classes are unique, but it just isn't my kind of game. I expect I'd play for a week or two and then be done. If I had a regular group to level up with I could get into it, but Guild Wars 2 may fill that niche better for me (no subscription, fantasy adventure game with friends).

Finished it with a Barbarian and a Wizard, and any interest I had in playing this game at release is gone. I suppose its nostalgia that had me looking forward to the game, but the click click click splat splat shiny shiny got real old real fast.
See you in GW2.

Just finished it as Monk. No regrets about the money I spent on the pre-order. I'm gonna have tons of fun with this game.
