I finally got logged back in. I have a guardian (36) and a mesmer (39). I'm playing the guardian for now, since that seems easier and less die-y. I've forgotten a lot. There are no journal quests? I think I just run around and do local events that pop up?

If you're in your 30s, odds are you haven't completed your Personal Story yet. That's the closest GW2 gets to Journal Quests. It should be ever-present in the top right of the screen.
Local events and Hearts are a fair way to get to know the map, lore, and build up your various currencies. Keep an eye on game updates and news in the launcher for seasonal and larger community events. Dungeons can be a fun and profitable diversion. Poke around the forums here a bit; I hear folks are trying to get a regular dungeon group going.
For tips, news, and general GW2-themed entertainment, check out the featured Podcast, Guild Wars reporter.
There's so much to do in this game at any given time that I still sometimes feel overwhelmed. Sometimes it's best to just wander the map, follow NPCs, or drop in with a zerg and see where it takes you.
Finally, if you do need ideas or help, feel free to ask, not just here but in-game. GW2 has the single best game community I've ever experienced. You'll get the occasional troll, yes. But they're the minority.

As I recall, Mesmer was kind of rough leveling until about level 50. Things got much easier then.
But yeah, what Kalabajooie said. Hearts pretty much replace quest hubs in this game. And with GW2, you get xp practically for breathing. Crafting gives you xp, WvW gives you xp, dungeons, living story, everything.

As for podcasts, I really enjoy Visualwood. The name sounds scary, but don't let that put you off. They often veer into other games and topics but GW2 is usually the major topic.

After playing my guardian a bit, I tried my mesmer again and decided it fit me better. I'm 40 with him. Been doing hearts and looking for skill points.

I may roll up a new class. I like ranged stuff without a lot of twitching around. What is good for that? Necro?

What do you mean by "twitching around"?

lots of spinning around, mashing buttons, moving and strafing, etc. to keep targets in sight. My hands get tired of that quickly.

I love my Norn Ranger... and Charr Warrior. Norn is 63, Charr is 45?
I don't "twitch" a lot with either, especially with the Ranger.
